AWwww Bill.... Took some friends by here today and Bill messed up everyone's orders. I'm old too, but thats NO excuse... I KNOW he has signs out that tout "IF you want it YOUR way go to Burger King" Yeah Bill, thats cute, but if I order a Hamburger that does NOT mean I want a Cheeseburger! Gunna back off of you here, meaning that IF I am in the neighborhood, I will stop in, but I will NOT be going out of my way to order the Burger I want and get it "YOUR way!" Bill, its NOT about "You", its about the "BURGER"!!! Sorry Folks, he's sortofa nice old guy (Even somewhat "Grumpy" can be "Iconic"), and Hirouku (sp?) is sweet, but there's better spots!! Stay open tho Bill, thar's Gold in them thar hills!!

Love this place. Burger was delicious! I'm picky when it comes to burgers so this is + in my book!

I had a double cheeseburger with bacon. Their burgers are simple nothing crazy. Pretty good overall but definitely not the best burger place in the valley.

Fresh, not-greasy, super tasty. Get the double cheeseburger, cream soda, and a bag of chips and you're good to go. Some of their homemade salsa/hot sauce doesn't hurt, either. Love this place. You feel like you've been transported back to the 1950s or somethin'. An underrated LA must!

Bills burgers is amazing, good quality food, and great people, I only wish they were open on weekends, so I can eat here everyday. Bill is a cool guy himself, he makes it feels like your at grandpas backyard BBQ. I love coming here and just sitting down and seeing bill due his thing, you should check this place out for sure.

Walked up, placed our order. Cashier was friendly and they had a little line going. We ordered a few double cheeseburgers and they were good! This guy has been in business this long because he does know how to make a burger. I'm not sure what the other so-so reviews are about but this is definitely worth a try. If it were closer to us, I'd visit every few months. I like it as much as an In N Out burger. That's a good thing right?

This is such a great traditional burger. nothing fancy just good old fashion burgers. I love the double cheeseburger with grilled onions. but its Cash Only!!!

Breaking news: A break through in science shows that eating Bills hamburgers can cure any form of illness from cancer to aids to lime disease. Knowing this information, I will eat my burgers from here for the rest of my life. That's how damn good they are!

  • Nico N.

Love this place! One of the last "old school" Hamburger places. Definitely no frills dining here!

  • Bryan M.

Small joint, small burgers, huge taste. It is a very comfy place to eat at. Feels like home. (Not by taste but by comfiness) It seems like you're right next to them when they're making it. I ordered the double cheeseburger and it was amazing. It must be that seasoned grill that has been there since before I was born. The lemonade was nice too. Not too sweet but not plain. It may be just a tad pricey but it's a burger joint and is well worth every penny.

  • Daniel W.

Great simple hamburger! Bill is in his late 80's and uses his grilling experience to make the juiciest, cheesiest burgers. Yum!

    (5)
  • Barry W.

These positive reviews have to be a joke. I went to Bill's for the first time yesterday. I ordered a cheeseburger as is--Bill's way! The meat was tasteless, overcooked and full of gristle. It was easily the worst burger I ever had, although the many flies hovering around did not seem to think so. Quaint is great, but this place is yech!

With such yummy burgers as intimate service, how can I give Bill's Burger's anything less than five stars? For only $3.80 each, my fiance and I enjoyed a simple, delicious cheeseburger. Even after adding chips (they don't make fries) and two iced teas, our bill only came out to $11 and something cents. And these cheeseburgers were so good! Just an uncomplicated, straight-to-the point, classic cheeseburger but oh, they do it so well! The guy taking the orders and running the register (which, by the way, looks like they haven't updated it since they opened this joint 30 years ago. LOVE it!) was soooo friendly and chatty. He joked around with all the customers -- since it's an old burger hut, you sit around a counter -- while Bill was behind him pretending to be a grump, but really was just as funny as the other guy. They both had their schticks and it was awesome. Fiance and I will definitely be coming back. The patty melt looked good and I want their double cheeseburger next time. Plus, it's a great place to go when you want to feel like you live in a small town. I don't know about Bill, but that other guy can seriously remember names.

No frill burgers, served up hot and fresh. A good burger, not spectacular. They don't have fries, which made me sad inside, but it's all right.

    (3)
  • Brian J.

Oh snap this place is good! Old school cheeseburger cooked on an old school flat top grill. Delicious! There's a reason they've been around for so long. Just wish they were open for Sat lunch.

  • Andrea S.

Found this place years ago, still the best burger joint I have ever found, and I've had a lot of burgers in my short life.. Burgers was all I ate to find THE one and my search was over! The most fresh burger you will ever have is waiting for you at this place. If you want a side to your burger your only option is a bag of classic lays for 30 cents!! Bill himself makes the burgers and his wife Hiroko assists him, best team ever. They're super nice and witty, which is refreshing in this community. Wish they were open late at night and weekends but they're just that good that you need to literally make your schedule work around them to eat at this amazing place!

  • Barbara D.

I was excited to have a day off of work so I could finally eat here as the hours are Monday - Friday 8-4.... pretty difficult to get here if you work a 9-5. Me and the BF both ordered cheeseburgers. $3.80 for a single cheeseburger, $4.60 for a double cheeseburger and cash only - always hate the cash only but understandable since it's little old Bill in his tiny stand. We both thought the burgers were good but not amazing. It was pretty much a standard hole-in-the-wall, regular burger.

  • Angie L.

Yummy little spot to grab a quick bite at, the buyers are juicy, pull up a stool and enjoy a home cooked burger with Bill. I do wish there was room for a fryer in that kitchen though, fries would be a great addition haha

    (4)
  • Elle D.

Everything was great. I just wish they are open later. I had to wait until I had a day off work to try a burger. It'll be a looooong time until I can have another. It's really good!

Excellent hamburgers. Will definitely come back again. The cheeseburger that I ordered was delicious.

One of my favorite burgers in the city; definitely in my top three---my top being Comme Ca. Anyhow, this another completely different being than that of Comme Ca; it would be like comparing a 60s Mini Cooper to new Porsche Carrera. Two different animals entirely. Bill's burgers are as simple as a burger can get and for some, it can be a negative. Previous reviewers seemed unimpressed due to the of-the-shelf ingredients---this place should not be reduced so readily. It's about getting something that has character in a period in which burgers joints in LA are trying to outdo each other with proprietary blends of ground beef, custom baked breads, and house made condiments. It's this type of burger that's disappearing, not because of how scarce it is but at the lack of places that can do so much with such humble ingredients. This place offers simplicity. They have a menu resembling one that would appear in a Popeye cartoon with J. Wellington Wimpy, jonesing for that juicy little piece of homeliness. Stare at one of these wax paper wrapped sandwiches seeping juice while sitting on the stool in an industrial section of Van Nuys and tell me that there isn't something just a little special about his spot. Be aware they don't have fries. It's better that way---at least for this place. The fries aren't there to distract you from the burger. Hell, since they aren't there, you can fit two burgers! And it's cheap as hell to boot. Do it. Go for lunch.

Very small place but amazing burgers idk what there secret is, but every burger ive had from bills has been made to perfection. I definitely recommend this place if your looking for a awesome home made style burger

After driving a solid 25 minutes and a good 2 weeks of poor planning on getting to this place I finally made it out to Bill's. Going to the bar was a bit intimidating. Bill had his back turned flipping burgers and a lady was just standing there kind of staring at us with that look like "these kids have never been here before". We finally sat down after a minute of bumbling around looking for the menu and found that it was in the shack. My friend had recommended the double cheeseburger with bacon and avocado so that's what I got. Looking around the "You can't have it your way" signs were staring me in the face, although I just had had it my way.... In fact I don't know how much more my way it could've been... Anyways we get the burgers and I take my first bite. It is pretty perfect I have to say. Everything is perfectly balanced in this burger to make it taste pretty amazing. Only qualm I have is the seasoning on the meat was a bit overpowering but everything else was done flawlessly. After finishing I just looked over at my friend and we were both thinking the same thing... Thank you sir may we have another. The grill definitely does play a role in the making of this food on account of my friends have actually bought meat off of him and tried grilling at their house, but to no avail have not gotten the same amazing flavor that you get at Bill's. It's worth noting that we overheard Bill talking about his age. 84 years old. Any man who can make a burger that good at that age has my respect.

  • David W.

I like a good cheeseburger and Bill's makes one of the best burgers in LA. It is as old school as you will find in Los Angeles as this is how burgers have been made in LA since the 1940's. If you live in LA, or are visiting LA, and you like a good burger, Bill's should be at the top of your list.

  • Brittany C.

I don't understand how or why, but this was the greatest tuna melt I've ever eaten in my life - and I LOVE tuna melts. I got the tuna, a bag of chips, and a 7-Up all for $6.50, too - woohoo! This place is CASH ONLY! There's street parking on Oxnard, and a little lot in the back, and if you're lucky, you'll get a seat on a stool right on Oxnard and not in the weird tented patio thing in the back. Bill looks like a grump, but he's incredibly nice. Don't be intimidated. This place rules.

    (5)
  • David C.

My new favorite burger in LA. Simple and sublime. Belly up to the counter and order yourself a double-cheese with a fried egg (no fries, sorry -- chips). Dang that grill has some flavor in it, cuz their burgers are super flavorful. Keep your expectations at quick, cheap, friendly and delicious. Check the hours before you go, they're pretty limited.

    (4)
  • Vahagn G.

I love this place. I come here at least once a week. Bill is the coolest grandpa ever. He hates it when you ask him to not put mayo in the burger. He doesn't have fries so you don't feel bloated after you eat. His meat is really fresh and he proves it by taking a bite all raw.

    (5)
  • Avery Y.

Best basic burgers in the valley! So good you'll need to order two!! Keep up the good work Bill...

    (5)
  • David C.

Can't go wrong with Bill's.... Great tasting meat sammiches. I always get the double b with bacon on top of extra bacon. Also try the tuna melt, it's amazing. Bill is a nice guy, but I like the old cashier more. She's so cute and nice

If you look up the definition of "hole in a wall restaurant" in a dictionary, more than likely, you will find a picture of Bill's. After hearing about this place for months, I finally made it there and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered a single cheeseburger and single hamburger. I must say that the cheeseburger was way more flavorful than the hamburger so definitely get that. They also offer a double cheeseburger as well as the option of getting it with bacon, so it's really up to your taste. Their burgers are simple and tasty although on the smaller side thus a fully grown man may need to consume 2 to be satisfied. Forget about having it your way, they serve it up the way they want. My friend asked for no pickles and when he got his burger, guess what, had pickles..lol. So why not 5 stars you ask? Plain and simple, they are too expensive since an entry level burger will run you back $6. For a hole in a wall establishment serving smaller than average burgers, they should not be charging that much. Bring the prices down a couple of dollars, and I will give you five stars. In closing, definitely will go back as the cheeseburger was delicious and I suggest you do the same. Oh and folks its a CASH ONLY spot, so stop at the nearest ATM if necessary.

The burger you crave whether your hungry or not... Best quick burger spot in the city.

Heard about this place a few weeks ago and was randomly brought here by a friend while visiting her at work in Van Nuys. Never thought I'd actually make it out to this place but so glad I did. This would be a dangerous place if it was within walking distance from my house. Simple, delicious burgers, with character. Absolutely in the middle of nowhere, and with a very mixed crowd, you should definitely check it out.

  • Ellen G.

Fantastic burgers and they even gave my dog a hot dog cut up into small pieces. The bun was fresh and soft with no sesame seeds - just how I like it and the burger was perfectly cooked. Washed it down with a coke and potato chips. Excellent prices.

As i make the trek from regular guy to old fart, I can't help but pick up random bits of wisdom along the journey. One thing I have learned is that when a place like this has been here for 4 decades with the same owner, it is going to be pretty awesome. Restaurateuring is a tough business. This place wouldn't be around if it wasn't good. I actually have driven by this place hundreds of times, but the other day in a 5 star hot dog place chatting with the owner, and he mentioned Bill and Hiroko's. I was a little embarrassed I hadn't tried it. So today I was a man on a mission. I ordered the double cheeseburger and got a nicely grilled double burger on a fresh bun with fresh produce, and I got to meet Bill. Bill is 83 and the owner/chef. This is a guy who still loves his work; and chatted with me as much as he did with the regulars. Told me about his son, a couple of other customers and how much he liked it there. That alone was worth about 5 stars. So 5 stars for the burger and 4 stars for Bill makes this a 9 star place. Even if you knock off a couple because he has 8 or 10 stools around a cramped counter, no french fries (or fryer for that matter) and only canned soda with cups of ice, you are still left with a 6 or 7 star meal. With chips and a can the meal came to $6.45. Well worth it in my book. Of course Yelp won't let me rate higher than 5 stars, so 5 it is.

Just went for my first time. I work at a burger restaurant and I love these more. Definitely something that everyone should try! Don't let the look of it fool you.

All I have to say is.....WOW! Believe the hype! This was the most delicious and fulfilling no-nonsense burger I've ever had. Yet it wasn't super heavy. I didn't feel like dying after eating a double cheeseburger and half a chili dog. Bill certainly knows what he's doing. The man is a burger genius. No doubt I'll be going back soon. Keep up the great work!!!!!

Sorry, but my first visit did not make me a believer.

OK, campers...this is the real deal! In a world filled with burgers stuffed with organic goat cheese and topped with artisan five-pepper-chili salsas, rustic arugula, and hand-picked mushrooms sauteed in garlic butter, Bill's burgers are honest, straightforward, and frankly delicious. I'd say they were the type of burgers my mother used to make, but my mother was a terrible cook, so I can't go there. Instead, it may just be that they remind me of the burgers that used to be commonplace in my youth, back when dinosaurs ruled the earth. Nothing pretentious, and certainly no-dried up piece of pink slime (yeah, I know, lean finely textured beef...uh huh) perishing under a heat lamp. The beef is fresh and cooked to perfection. Other Yelpers here have credited much of the taste to the well-seasoned grill, and I have no dispute with that. The toppings are simple and plentiful...just the usual suspects, shredded iceberg lettuce, onions, tomato, pickles, and mayo. I used to think I couldn't eat a burger without mustard, but I know now I can. Mustard, or any other condiment, would have interfered with the essential flavor of the burger, and that would have been some sort of culinary crime. Everything is packed between a perfectly sized bun so it all becomes a distilled unit of burger bliss. I had the double cheese with bacon, and my tummy did somersaults of glee after every bite. There are fries on the menu, only chips. I thought this might have been a problem, but I actually didn't miss them a bit. Good french fries can be often be hard to find and have actually been the downfall in some recent burger outings (I'm looking at you, Tommys...and you, too, In-n-Out). You won't miss the fries, trust me. Another reason to go? You need to watch the owner, Bill, in action. The gentleman, in his eighties, has been at the grill for almost fifty years. Bill's a machine...a slow-moving but deliberate machine. Look for him to toss a slice of cheese onto a burger from a few feet away. Burger theater at its best. A double bacon cheeseburger with chips set me back about six bucks. You can miss the shack if you're not attentive, but it's not that hard to find. Plenty of parking on the street and in the back. Bill takes the weekend off and only accepts cash. Do yourself a favor...Eat at Bill's

Love this place, great burgers especially the pastrami burger is amazing! Very nice owners! If they added fries to the menu they'd get the 5 th star no problem!!

  • Trevor S.

I was skeptical when I arrived. Sometimes burgers out of dives like this get amazing reviews, because the burgers secrecy is the cause for hype. But not this place. Here, it's all about the taste. I just didn't think something so simple could be so good. I was expecting a good double cheeseburger for under 5 bucks. I got a lot more. The couple running the place move at their own pace. It's one of those places where you sort of crowd the window, make eye contact to order, watch your burger being grilled on the flat top, eat, and then say "I need to pay" (wish cash). Very laid back and the double cheeseburger is ridiculous. I'm craving it 3 hours after I ate it.

  • Bob W.

I decided to wait for all the hoopla on Bill's from the LA Magazine to die down. I like lots of people had not heard of Bill's and most likely would never stop in with out the article. Since then I have tried it several times. The burger is great one of the best. A sign on the cash register reads"You can't have it your way. This is not Burger King", you can. After the LA Mag came out lots of people came in, on my first visit Bill was talking with someone from New Zealand asking about hours. Things have died down and most of the patrons are locals, with lots of take out orders. Lots of parking behind and on the street

  • Hke C.

I've been going to this place for over 5 years and best believe they truly have earned this review because the burgers are just insanely great no competition what so ever. I usually have 2 double cheeseburgers and if I can I push for a 3rd with single. Must try if I had the chance I would give ten 10stars. Keep up the amazing work This place is hidden and amazing.

    (5)
  • Greg O.

Had it for the first time today, and the reviews don't lie... blah blah blah 45 years, bill is 85 blah blah blah Now, let's get to business. There's a lot of room for parking, in the back, be careful not to miss it. Had a triple burger with cheese and grilled onions, man was it heavenly. It seems like he puts some sort of mayo on the bun giving it some extra flavor.. If you want an amazing burger, you've found the place..if you're looking for anything more..you won't find it here

    (4)
  • Hugo G.

My first 4 star review I guess? Haha Bill's restaurant is very quaint, relaxed, and homey. But the latter might be my only complaint about this place. It is too homey when it comes to the food. A lot of people praise the down-to-earth nature of these burgers. No frills, no whistles. However, we're talking standard, supermarket ingredients + a grill. I mean, that's completely it. Nothing special about the meat, the cheese, the bread, or the seasoning. It's all just very...standard. When you utter the word "Homemade" in reference to restaurant food, the term usually brings images of superb freshness, high-quality ingredients, and secret recipes. Unfortunately, the term "homemade" doesn't meet that expectation here. Standard freshness, standard ingredients (regular patties, regular cheese, regular bread), and I couldn't say I tasted anything that should have been kept a secret. Does he make a great burger? Absolutely, I'd love to have these at home. But that just might be it, I can have these at home, and quite easily too. I would just have to stop by at Vons first.

One of the best old school burgers, simple and cheap and not disappointing. Drove by it for years had a urge for a burger. Never happens these days usually a sushi craving but so happy I stopped and will definitely be back.

  • Reza T.

One of the best burgers in the valley! Bill is the sole owner and has been running this business from day 1. Service is great, Bill and the employees are all nice and very welcoming. However, the burgers are even better! If you like burgers that taste juicy and homemade, this is the spot for you. I always get the double cheeseburger with pastrami and bacon added on top. DELICIOUS! the only downfall of this place is that it closes early in the day. However, if you have time during the day, go stop by.

  • Jed R.

This is my favorite burger in LA. Umami burger? Tasty, but over-hyped and over-priced. In n Out? Tasty, but it tastes like what it is: a fast food burger with slightly better ingredients. Bills tops them all. You won't get french fries here, but what you will get is a delicious, inexpensive burger cooked on a flat top that has the delicious seasoning of years and years of use. Simple, cheap, and godddamn delicious. I love Bill and Hiroko's.

    (5)
  • Bob B.

Best burgers in town. I was little skeptical about trying it because of the location and the atmosphere but once i had it i can say its the best burgers i ever had. I ended up eating 3 double burgers.

    (5)
  • Mickey S.

Bills is not some fancy Umami BS. Bills is a good, clean, fast burger that does a busy man right. They also have tuna for weirdos like me. I know because I have worked across the street from Bill for 18 years. I should tell you all they aren't just a burger place to me, they are family. But still worth yelping about. I mean it's the people who know you longest who really know you right???

  • Philip D.

This is in an industrial area which may help it's reviews. The food was just okay. preformed patty on a soft bun is not enough to warrant a return for me. The owners were very nice but still not enough quality food.

    (2)
  • Angie G.

This place was great. Fresh but not greasy! just make sure you get atleast 2 patties because they are so thin.

  • M N.

Sorry In-N-Out, it's just not working out between us anymore. I'm about to leave you for Bill's Double Cheeseburgers. Here's why: His burger is as simple as it gets. Bill's burger patty melts in your mouth and I'm sick of rubbery burger patties you keep serving me. I like that Bill serves breakfast, too. He doesn't have the fancy-shmancy secret menu like you. Bible verses are nowhere near around the food packaging. He's not pretentious and he doesn't try to be cool, he just serves really good burgers. I'm in love with how simple it is to order without having to memorize what 'style' I want my burger to be. Thanks for the memories ;-)

Been hearing all the raves about this place being one of the best burgers in LA so had to check it out. Small, simple place where you saddle up onto one of the handful of stool right by the grill as you watch and listen to your burger sizzle on the grill. Totally reminded me of the burger stands you find all over my beloved hometown of Chicago! True to form, Bill and his wife were there grilling burgers side by side. I'm happy to report that my cheeseburger did not disappoint!!! Bill's is the perfect example of how simple ingredients given to an expert grillsman can create a delicious meal greater than its parts. So if you're in the valley and in need of a burger, don't hesitate to make a stop and see Bill! Only downside is that they're only open on weekdays and close by 4p. So make sure you keep this in mind before you go.

My buddy has been telling me for months to check out Bill's around the corner from my house. I finally stopped by after the gym today and oh my god was it an experience. Classic burger stand, outdoor seating, cash only, limited by fairly priced menu. No fries, closes at 4, and I don't mind because it is so amazing.

  • Jonas A.

I am not a burger connoisseur, but Bill's might change that. Making simple food exceptionally well is a difficult feat and I can see why Bill's has its legions of admirers. I ordered a chili cheese burger. The burger was on the smallish side, but that hearkens back to an era when Americans didn't over-stuff themselves at every sitting. All of the elements of the burger were perfectly balanced. The perfectly seasoned meat, chili (not particularly sloppy on the burger and moderately seasoned), pickles, American cheese and super-soft bun worked in perfect harmony. There wasn't any single element that took prominence; it was just subtle excellence all across the board. They don't have fries, just plain potato chips and it's cash only.

This is literally the best burger to ever slide down my throat hole. Bill is doing one thing right and that's doing ONE thing RIGHT! A simple burger, seasoned meat, gooey cheese, fluffy bun .. My mouth is watering. My friend didn't believe me when I said it was better than in-n-out, but since her first bite of Bills, she's a believer. Seriously .. Eat it exactly how they serve it. Don't go adding chilli or bacon distracting from the simple, yet addictive flavor. I made that mistake before and the original way is the best way. Avoid going around lunch unless you call ahead because a small crowd begins to gather around the joint and you can barely see the building through the people. Small lot behind it with ample parking. There's also a little patio in the back area for overflow. If you go after 2:30-3pm you will risk then running out of patties. I feel like their following is slowly growing and they cannot always guarantee demand. Oh, and don't order anything smaller than a double or you'll definitely be ordering 2 burgers. A single is just not enough. They have a secret breakfast menu I've heard about that sounds promising but I'm going to stick to what I know. They also serve pop, Gatorade, sometimes have pink lemonade and they also have chips. I usually come equipped with my own water to wash away guilt .. Sometimes I'll ride my bike here so I don't feel as bad about indulging. Bills is definitely worth the trip. Best burger EVER.

***MY 1000TH REVIEW*** Goes to Bill's Hamburgers on Oxnard in the heart of the SFV. While I contemplated trekking up to Yountville for a scrumptious multi course meal at French Laundry I opted for something close to home after several days of travel. It's simple pleasures like Bill's that are able to satisfy one just as much if not more so, for a rather miniscule fraction of what I could have spent at another 5 STAR eatery. We arrived shortly after 11A on a Tuesday afternoon and almost every stool was taken at the stand, we snagged two and I was on the lookout for Bill. Didn't see him and thought to myself... did I really end up visiting this place when Bill the man isn't around? Unheard of! Hiroko was on the grill when we arrived. I was here for one thing and one thing only, a double cheeseburger with everything on it (mayo, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and pickles) and since I had scouted this joint out with every intention of it being my 1000th review, I even ordered a Sprite :) to celebrate! I never drink soda, so if I was going to indulge, I was doing it with a soft drink. Shortly after ordering, who made a surprise appearance for my viewing pleasure...? None other than, Bill! I've read a few write ups on this place and Bill, so I wasn't going to approach him for a picture, convo or anything of that nature incase he was a wee bit cranky, but from his track record maybe I could have had a shot at being wifey #6 ;) and learn to grill on a flattop from the 20's from a man who is almost 3x my age. I do like'm older and with glasses ;) (shameless shout out to my boyfriend ;) Our double cheeseburgers, sodas and one bag of classic Lays (no fries here peeps!) arrived and we chowed down. Delish!! and So satisfying! I don't always love simple or traditional but this burger is Tasty! I also don't tend to eat red meat, even opting for only grilled cheese sandwiches from other burger joints or veggie patties but these beef patties were perfection and everything went so well together, the right ratio of beef, to bread, to cheese, to onion, to pickle. I finished my double cheeseburger and almost wanted another it was so damn good! but no room for that gluttonous behavior. I'll definitely be back, and would highly recommend Bill's to any burger lover out there! If I can toss back a double cheeseburger and be left wanting more, I'm pretty convinced you'll love this place. Great place for lunch! Limited hours - closing by 4P and not open on weekends makes this a playing hooky kind of lunch for those not living or working nearby or one of those spots you hit on your day off just to add that extra special old school touch to the day. They are cash only, being rung up on the original cash register that can't ring more than $5.99. Our total was $13 and some change - Big spendas! Great customer service, like any great local eatery they know their regulars and just in the short amount of time we spent there, they had several of them! Go get'm kids! but don't tell Bill I sent ya.

This is just a real down home no frills or thrills hamburger. It a hamburger you would imagine being served on any Main St. USA. It is masterful in its simplicity. My last hamburger was last week at My Father's Office. Bill's hamburger is the anti-thesis of that hamburger. Both are really good for very different reasons. The roadside hamburger stand atmosphere at Bills makes for even a better eating experience. For all of you foodies out there wanting a drop dead froo froo hamburger this is not your place. Come to Bills knowing, what you see is what you get and I mean that as a compliment.

Simple delicious burgers! I had the double cheeseburger with no mayo. It wasn't huge but it was simple and tasty. Great service, simple, delicious food in a small stand on Oxnard. If you're in the area and craving a burger, I suggest you give this place a try. Excellent overall experience!!! :-)

quick and TASTY bite. Small but oh my god its good. Double Cheeseburger is amazing. Not to get confused, its not gourmet restaurant but out of all fast food and burger joints this one is the BEST. No fries, no asking for anything special, just enjoy simple burger.

This is what a burger is supposed to taste like. The patty is thin, so you should order a double cheeseburger, and there's no fries, only chips, and the only soda is in cans (you get the choice of both Coke and Pepsi) ... but you can forget all that. It's obvious Bill has been doing this 4 decades because every shake of seasoning and flip on the grill is ingrained in his muscle memory. He readily admits he "knows a thing or two" from his experience. Ask him what's the secret, and he says he only buys his beef from a seller in Northridge, never from LA. OK, so I don't really know what that means, but you can taste the difference. The cheese and meat meld together in a way that protein, fat, dairy, and salt are supposed to. This is in a little shack that's easy to miss amidst all the auto shops and warehouses in Van Nuys, so just keep an eye out for the carpet store.

I was completely surprised at how tasty the burgers are. It is a hole in the wall, probably not visited by the health department too often as their Servesafe policies are definitely not in place. And no one could accuse them of being too friendly. The old man doing the cooking must be Bill. There's a sign up on the wall that says something like "You'll have I my way or you won't have it at all". It took 20 minutes for them to make my burger and there was only two people ahead of me. And no French fries. I'd rate them 2 stars for overall experience but the hamburger is pretty darn tasty!!

My Google Nav. failed in directing me to which side Bill's was on. It might be a little difficult to find because there are so many auto stores around it. It's a small shack so keep your eyes open for it. Your nose might detect it before your eyes. Bill is super nice and definitely old, but he knows how to make a mean hamburger. I got a cheeseburger and coke. They don't have fries so don't bother asking. My eyes lit up after my first bite. I finally satisfied my burger craving. I just had to get another one. It was one of the best burgers I've tasted in my life. I don't know if I'll be coming back anytime soon because of the distance from me, but I'm so glad I had a chance to try Bill's before graduating Van Nuys.

Was brought here for some lunch and I judged the place before I tasted the burgers. Yes the place is small and old but that is where the flavor is hiding!! I got a basic Hamburger which melted in my mouth on every bite and I think their slogan is pretty funny "what In n Out used to taste like".

I have been going to Bill's for just over 4 years now and it has yet to disappoint me. Bill makes simple old fashion burgers and he has turned a little stand into a real hidden gem of the valley. Good food in the San Fernando valley can be very hard to come by, in fact I can count on one hand how many places I look forward to eating at in the valley. Bill's is one of those places. There is only one thing on the menu I get when i go there and I have never felt the need to get anything else. It is the cheeseburger. If you judge this burger on appearance alone you will be fairly unimpressed. It is just your run of the mill white bun, chopped iceberg lettuce, onions, tomato, pickles, cheese, and a hamburger patty in my case 2 hamburger patties. So what makes this burger so good? The well seasoned griddle is the real secret and you can taste is right when you take your first bite. A flavor only years of use can achieve and it can not be imitated. Is this the best burger i have ever had? Simply put no, in good conscience i can not tell you this is the best burger i have ever had. It would only be a disservice to you if i said that, but it is one tasty burger and it can even hold its own against some of the newer re-imagined gourmet burgers that are becoming more and more popular. But if you want a good burger and a very affordable price Bills is an excellent choice. As for the chips that everyone loves to complain about, well I'm right there with you. although the fact that they do not serve fries does not take away from the actual burger, it does in someway feel incomplete. A hot side of fries with my double cheeseburger could be the exact thing that puts the Bills experience over the top.

Awesome burgers! No frills. I've driven past this place literally 400 times without ever noticing it, but it is not to be missed! I tried the double cheeseburger ($4.90) and loved it! I usually end up taking onions and lettuce off my burgers and adding copious amounts of condiments, but these are awesome as is. It's fun to sit at the counter and watch your burger sizzle on the griddle as Bill tells you about how KTLA and LA Magazine have given him more business than he wants. He seems like a good guy. And true the place has exactly zero frills, but who needs frills when you can get one of the best burgers around?

I moved to the neighborhood ten years ago and its taken me that long to finally try this place. The hours are family restaurant hours so they're not open afterwork or weekends i believe. At least whenever i drive by it is closed. The lady and the man (Bill?) that work the register and grill are adorable and sweet as can be. The hamburger is similar to an In & Out burger, but because it's made with more tender loving care, it tastes that much better. Support this place, Van Nuys. Thanks

I have been going to Bill's for about 10 years and have never had a better burger anywhere. I hate to hear people ask for a burger with no this and no that. Just let Bill make your burger I, guarantee you will never eat a better burger. Unless you break out in a rash or your throat swells up from tomatoes just trust Master Bill. Bill opened this place in the early 60's and has never missed a day of work. Thank God I only need to drive 10 miles for the BEST. By the way he makes an awesome omelet.

Whats not to love about this Ma and Pa shack located in the middle of some random parking lot??? No real menu. You go simply for the burgers. I had Five Guys the other day and personally i like this burger better!!! BTW they do not have fries and i believe only take cash!!

Great burger stand. I used to eat here with my dad 25+ years ago....And I still stop by!

  • Cool Breeze V.

OK......... I must say they make a good old fashioned burger. Good to the last bite the way it should be made. But one has to question the overall cleanliness of this place. The condiments sitting out all day in the heat, the constant exchange of money and so on. Just close your eyes and eat your burger or get it to go brother. The longer you are there the more your mind wanders.

  • Christina M.

Good ol' fashioned burger joint! I don't kid when I say joint. This place is small! No inside seating. They have a very small back patio and seats at the counter. It's pretty much a shack with a bunch of cracks and chipping paint. But that's why I love it! Bill knows what he's doing! He seems like he's been doing it for years too. He grills tasty burgers and sells them for super cheap. Heads up though! There are no fries. Just Lays chips that come with your burger in a brown paper bag. Straight up old school =).

I stopped by yesterday, I was trying to find somewhere new to eat, and after reading the reviews I knew what I wanted. I wanted a double cheeseburger from Bill's. I went to the counter at about 3:10pm and said I was told to have the double cheeseburger and they laughed. We chatted it up a bit and my burger was done. First off, the burger patties were thin, and flavorful. The cheese was standard cheese, lettuce, mayo, all good. The kicker though was the freshly diced onions. I'm an onion whore, yes that's right onion whore. These onions added so much to the already tasty burger I was impressed... I was beyond impressed. Bill's double cheeseburger was $4.45 including tax and left me much more satisfied than In N Out has (lately atleast) One of my new fav. spots for sure.

  • Greg B.

Absolutely one of the best burgers in the valley! Don't kid yourself, you'll want a double cheeseburger -- the singles are too skimpy. And don't expect french fries (that's why they lose a star unfortunately), this is a really old fashioned place and all ya get is potato chips on the side. Still, Bill has been cooking burgers at this little stand since 1965 and he uses very fresh beef cooked on an old, seasoned cast iron grill. The also serve great spicy homemade salsa and pickled jalapenos (both free of charge), and will make you a grilled cheese or egg salad sandwich if you prefer. I know the odds are against it, but I really hope this stand stays open for another 44 years.

Well this place was just delectable. It was fast and quick, to the point and delicious. The counter only fit a handful of people but we got there around 11:30 pm and there was plenty of room. We watched the burgers cooked on the grill. Ted had has with a fried egg (and boy do I wish I had too). We got a few A&W's. And it was a perfect meal. I would totally go back in a heart beat. And devour one of those delicious burgers!!!!!!!

  • Lisa C.

My husband and I have driven past this shack for YEARS! Finally stopped there a few weeks ago. I had a grilled ham and cheese, he had a double cheese burger. The best way I can describe it is this: Picture the PERFECT food that you would make yourself on a buttery grill at 1:00AM, when you're trying to sop up some of the alcohol in your stomach. We were eating there sober at 2:00PM, but it felt the same. We both loved our food and talking to the owner (and the famous person sitting next to us.) It's a great business that's been there over 40 years, for great reason. And it was only $11 for both of us. You have to sit outside, but COME ON it's Los Angeles! Yum.

I can't remember the last time I ate a whole meal and because I enjoyed it so much ordered a second meal at the same place. That's what just happened to me at Bill's. This is a great burger. I got the double cheeseburger with bacon and grilled onions, and I split a chili cheese dog with a friend. It was so delicious I had to order a second burger just to relish the taste. Yes it was greasy, yes I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack now, but it was all worth it because it tasted so damn good. Bill himself came out while we were eating and gave us a brief history of his shop. He has been there in that same location since 1967. He's 83 now and still working every day. He told us he plans on retiring in 7 years when he turns 90, so everyone should get out there and eat a Bills burger while we still can.

Good burger, but certainly not the best I have had. Nicely done burger, but a commercial bun, and chips, no fries. For a place touted as being the best in LA, I would expect a bit more.

The Best Burger in the Valley....William The Legend Todd introduced me last year and I have been loyal ever since. Bill doesn't horse around and he's always glad to tell you how he has not taken a sick day since the place opened. What a studd.

In-n-Out Burger but without the 20 minute wait! I LOVE this place! The sign now says Bill and Hiroko's Burgers...but it's the same place...same burger. Bill is a great down to earth guy (I had a nice conversation with him and Hiroko). Bill's been there since 1965. WOW! Had Samuel L. Jackson on the brain as I ate my cheese burger.."Now, that IS a tasty burger!!" But no fries-only chips.

Found this place from an L.A. book my friend gave me. Very unassuming place, I actually passed it a few times before finding it. I didn't expect much and got a burger to go, but I was genuinely psyched on what I had for lunch that day. It was just a very simple, very good burger and you can't really go wrong with that. I wish they had more options than just a mini bag of chips, but whatever

We adore this place simple hambergers they have a flavor that I cannot make at home...Pure delicous no fries you get chips with every order. and its a itty bitty place dont blink twice or you might miss it.

This is a great little burger stand. Its great for lunch if you work near the area. I work in an office in Sherman Oaks and I drive down there with a few co-workers. The place isn't big at all. There are about 10 seats around the front and a few in the back inside. You get to see the grill and Bill cooking the burgers. They come out pretty quick. The burgers are delicious! Very fresh and tasty. I usually get the double bacon cheeseburger and you get chips on the side. No fries though. You can have lemonade or a can of soda too. Everyone is really nice. The food is pretty cheap, and very very yummy. The only thing is they're open from 8am til 4pm Monday thru Friday, so this is definitely a work lunch thing, unless you don't work then don't worry about it lol. Go try the burgers!

I am in search of an amazing burger in the San Fernando Valley that compares to: Father's Office, Golden State, or Umami Burger. I like the hole-in-the-wall/Shabby-shack feel of Bill's and Hirokos. Bad hours. No french-fries. Had the regular burger. It is a thin patty. And yes, it reminded me of In-and-out burger without out the fancy sauce. It was a good burger. But was not amazing. I probably would have been more happy with In and out. I'm looking for thick and juicy...That is probably my problem. If I were in the area at the right time, I might come back. I would not make a special trip down here for the burger though. Did not try the pastrami. I you have a little bit more money to spend, you might try Cheesecake Factory's Kobe burger and ask for garlic aioli if you must have a tasty burger in the Valley. I find it surprisingly good for a big "chain". Most of my burger outings have so far been in the west hollywood area: 8oz, umami, golden state, etc... Hit me up if you know of a good burger joint in the Valley.

Right before a friend of mine took me here, I was surprised when he told me this place even existed. A burger stand on Oxnard between Kester and Van Nuys you say? All I remember seeing were warehouses, carpet stores, glass shops, automotive repair garages... But alas, Bill and Hiroko's was indeed embedded among this stretch of industrial sprawl! The location is literally a hamburger stand. There's some seating in the back patio, but if you ever want to get an order in, you sit at one of the barstools at the front L-counter and order from there. The menu is simple, as is the food. But I assure you, the greatness of this place is in its simplicity. You get to watch Bill working his craft one patty at a time: a pre-formed patty gets thrown onto his well seasoned grill and topped with a dash of salt and pepper. His burger stand was apparently established in 1965, so I can only imagine the kind of action that grill has seen and the depth of flavor it must contribute to the final product. I got my burger as plain as it comes: on a grilled bun, with mayo, tomato, and lettuce. I had two of these things, and I have to say - they're not large, they're not complicated, but DAMN they're good. What really sells these burgers isn't any sort of fancy gimmick, trick, or flashy gourmet toppings, but the quality of the hamburger itself - this thing was soo fresh, flavorful, juicy, rich, salty, savory... unlike anything you could possibly taste in a fast food establishment. Now, I know this isn't Burger King, so I can't have it my way, but I would love it if this place had fries. They sell chips for your salty potato side "dish" needs here, but I'm generally not a huge fan of just buying a bag of Lays especially when I'm eating such a good burger. There's always quite a wait to eat here from what I gather, despite the fact that they work fast, but I've seen regulars come up and just pick up huge orders, so they probably called in beforehand in anticipation of the wait times. There's also the option of adding grilled onions, bacon, and cheese, but I kept it simple this time. I might just step it up a notch and get some custom work done on my next Bill burger. Inexpensive, old-fashioned burgers - I'll definitely be back soon.

A burger is more than the ground beef that sizzles on the grill. It's more than the bun and the accompaniments. It's also the atmosphere in which it's served, and at Bill's you can't take a bite of burger without getting some delicious atmosphere at the corners of your mouth. I liken Bill's to a west coast soup nazi's. I was clued into Bill's by Steve at Top Notch Towing a block north on Calvert. Steve prepped me for the first visit by saying that Bill will serve you the way he wants to serve you and you'll take it. No "have it your way" privileges here. Knowing this going in, I had a good time watching it all play out as Steve had promised. Bill was gruff and tough and tossing patties onto the grill while the ladies (maybe relatives - a wife, a granddaughter?) collected the cash and delivered the burgers and chips in old-timey baskets. The burger is definitely tasty. I prefer a hefty half or three quarter pound slab, like the burger at Paradise Cafe in Santa Barbara or the Fuego Burger at North End Caffe in Manhattan Beach. The price is nice, similar to a fast food joint, but you're getting the true Mom and Pop experience here - no assembly line food prep and pimply kids with squeaky voices to take your order. The stand itself is a major part of the appeal of Bill's. You either have to be told of Bill's or you have to drive very slowly and pay close attention while on Oxnard to even notice the place is there. The signage does not alert one to the presence of food, the hours are shorter than average, and the stand itself is a throw-back to better days - compact and cozy with stools at the open air counter. A great place to go for something unexpected. Just don't try to tell Bill how it's done or NO BURGERS FOR YOU, ONE YEAR!

I've been all over the country looking for the perfect burger and this is the place everything else gets compared to. There's just a little special something when you get a burger from Bill, Sharon or Hiroko. I've been going here whenever I get the chance since the early nineties, but Bill's been there forever and he's got a pretty big following. Don't expect some extremely nicely prepared burger, and don't ask for fries, chips are the way to go anyway. It's a shame I can't go visit Bill on the weekends or even weekdays after 4, since he's closed. I guess it makes it all the more enjoyable when I can actually make the trek out there.

so i was on the prowl again for some good eats around where i work in van nuys, when i came across this place called Bill's Hamburgers. *fyi the real name is Bill and Hiroko's Hamburgers* if you want to hear about my little adventure, keep reading. if you just want to know about the food, scroll down :) i drove down van nuys blvd. and made a right at oxnard, only to drive up and down oxnard 3 times looking for this place. there's some breakfast diner/coffee shop place that i saw, but it didn't say anything about a guy named Bill. howeverr, there was a big sign that said "Bill Ferrel Co." but that sign didn't say anything about burgers. after i saw that sign, i looked down and i see what can only be described as a hole in a wall, with a few red barstools along a tiny counter. i thought to myself, this must be the place, and i'm only getting more and more curious.... so i walked up to the counter and two guys were quietly having their burgers. awkward silence. i didn't see a menu around so i peeked under the window and there was a pretty simple menu up on the wall. burgers, cheeseburgers, chili, pastrami, tuna, ham, and assorted drinks. so i ordered a chili cheeseburger with the small asian woman behind the counter, who i'll assume was Hiroko. it was served with a side of regular Ruffles potato chips, and i got a coke with it. apparently, this is one of those places where you don't pay your bill until you've finished your food. the burger was good, but the flavor of the chili (which does have beans in it) covered up the taste of the burger, so i left the place not knowing what the burger tasted like. needless to say, i had to go back for further investigation. i stopped by again this week to order a double cheeseburger, but this time, Bill was there! i felt like i stumbled upon a meadow to discover a Brontosaurus grazing. he didn't really say much. actually, he didn't say anything because Hiroko took my order again. but getting back to the point, the burger was good. it wasn't gourmet ingredients, it wasn't nirvana sandwiched in between a hamburger bun, it was just a good burger. i would imagine the experience of stopping by a dusty little burger shack along route 66 back in the day would've been something like eating at this place. thumbs up for being a tiny burger shack that's not a corporate operation like In n Out or The Habit. thumbs up for serving IBC Root Beer. thumbs up for a good burger with melty cheesy goodness. next on the task list: find out what the pastrami is like....

I've been going to Bill, Sharon & Hiroko's Burger joint for the past 8 years. The burger is simple and amazing. I always get the double cheese, no onion. I think what makes these burgers so good is the griddle the burger is cooked on, very seasoned. Bill has been here flippin' burgers for the past 40 years. He is 82 now and says he is going to retire when he is 90. Go get one of these burgers before he is gone.

A working relic of an old-fashioned hamburger stand. This place is the real deal, Bill himself has been on that grill forever. As for the burgers, absolutely delicious. Fresh, hot and absolutely perfect, I wouldn't change a thing. They say it's what In 'n Out used to be and I'd say that's a spot-on description. The burgers are similar but I find a trip to Bill's much more enjoyable than the other guy's drive-thrus. You get a soda and bag of chips on the sides and the cash register pre-dates all forms of consumer credit.

Totally on the bandwagon with this one. Absolutely happened upon it (no yelp help) after getting a repaired keyboard at Ken Rich Sounds. Just an L-shaped counter on Oxnard with a little dining area out back. Ordered a cheeseburger and fries. Waitress said "No fries, honey, want chips?" I declined and sat back, thinking of how it reminded me of an old burger place I would go to with my grandmother in Muskogee, OK when I was a kid. Bill held court with a couple of folks, probably old friends, while I sat next to an old guy who was waiting for his togo egg salad sandwich. I had my western-style tooled leather billfold out waiting to pay. He asked me where I got it, and I said I bought it in Bakersfield. He said, "probably made in China, though." He was correct. The burger was so so right, definitely of a bygone era. Just a burger, a coke, and sittin around the counter making small talk with folks. Sometimes that's perfection.

Just had my very first Bill's experience, and I gotta say it was quite a treat! Incredibly fair price, and well worth a tip if you consider the entertainment value of such genuinely nice guys behind the counter - one guy in our party even gave them a full $10.00 bonus! In this fast paced world there's something heart-warming about a "hole-in-the-wall" diamond in the rough like Bill's, where you can get a delicious burger and not break the bank. So if you're ever in the area be sure to check them out... and say hello to Santa if he's there again!

Burger was ok...A lil greasy and sloppy(check the Picture) ...Bill cooked it himself even...Expected a lot more outta this place considering it made Los Angeles Magazine as one of the best burgers in the city.....I think the person who wrote the article must be related to Bill in someway...

Best burgers I have ever had! My friends and I have been coming here for 10 years and the food is always top notch. The Bacon, egg and cheese sandwich might even be better than their burgers, and I don't even like bacon or eggs.

Bill has been making burgers for longer than you have been alive. Seriously. And they are the best burgers you can get. Seriously. This place is small and looks like a shack but you will find the hidden treasure that so many people have already rated so highly. They have excellent burgers but also serve pastrami, tuna, and chili. You might be turned off when they tell you they have no fries (they have potato chips) but you will be totally convinced it was worth it. You will return to this place after you try it. Seriously.

I got the 411 on this place from today's weekly YELP-The Valley update. I've passed this place I don't know how many times in the past, and I'll tell ya - if I'm hungry and in the area there's no way I will pass it up again. Parking might be a chore, but at 3:00 pm this afternoon, it was no problem. Be watchful as you look for the place because if you blink you will pass right by, and there is no attention-grabbing signage. There is a large sign above the place but it is for Bill's Tile & masonry or somethig like that. When I got there THE Bill was sitting at the counter - he was having a cup of coffee after reparing the trim around the counter - a customer earlier in the day ripped his shirt. I had the double cheeseburger and a lemonade and paid less than six bucks! The burger was every bit as good as previous reviews said. Bill says his secret is using a cast iron rather than steel grill. The Ruffles on the side were just enough to make it a great meal; Bill even asked if I wanted more chips, & Hiroko offered me more lemonade 2 or 3 times. The 1950's era cash register and the "this ain't Burger King" sign add a nice bit of charm to the place 8 red leather bar stools are all the seating, so I disagree that it is good for groups. There are better burgers around, but none I've tasted with the value, excellent taste and mouth appeal as this one. Like I said, I'll definately be back. BTW, Bill says he's been there 44 years.

Quick, cheap and delicious. Bring cash! I felt like a wimp when I saw all the regulars ordering 2 burgers a piece.

Awesome Stuff!! I love getting the double pastrami. The chili is real good, I always get the chili dog but I've heard their chili size is delicious.

Had a cheeseburger with chips and a can soda for less than $6!. Bill is the owner/cook and is extremely friendly. They have grilled cheese for vegeterians and a few other options other than burgers as well. A must visit for those close by!... oh, and the "anti mcdonalds" and "anti BK" signs are priceless

I was in the area today and decided to hit Bills, and Hiroko's. Ordered the double cheese, chips and a Diet Coke, this the most old fashioned burger in town! I love this place, only open during the week, but I'll be back with my peeps! I went kinda early and now I just got back from Baja Fresh, and had a Nacho Burrito, not great!

Get the chili dog. Seriously, best in the city.

  • AJ R.

Awesome burgers! This is a what I call a simple plain burger with a lot of taste! I've had the single, the double, the chili-cheese burgers and they are all good. I strongly recommend this place to all those who crave an old fashion burger. Don't bother with the tomatoes and "secret" sauce, and all the other stuff. Simple condiments makes this place a favorite. The service is also "mom and pop" style. I LOVE IT!

Best hamburgers in the Valley. Just let them do their thing, don't ask for ketchup. Only complaint is the limited hours of operation. Cash only.

Cruising down the industrial alley of Oxnard St., I noticed an out-of-place plume of smoke billowing skyward and said - wait... was that a burger shack? I quickly parked only to find the low-pro, sign-less burger shack was closing up - but a 300 lb. customer was still finishing a burger at the counter, so I asked, "How are the burgers?" Without hesitation and with a full mouth, he said, "Best damn burgers in the valley". Based on his word and this seemingly synchronistic discovery, I went back the next day to find out just how right he was - and that he was also revealing the title of this burger Valhalla to me - "Bill and Hiroku's Best Burger in the Valley". Off the map and old-school (around since the 60's), this is a burger shack, a dive arguably - but the cheese-burgers and open-faced chili dogs are good enough to sate any burger snob (raves about the pastrami are often heard, too). And while a signs says "You can't have it your way", Bill and Hiroku and the rest of the staff will take care of your burger needs (as long as said needs fall within the realm of with / without chili, cheese or grilled onions). The double cheese with grilled onions - always made to order - is the way to go... Don't miss one of the last great LA burger shacks.

Blink and you'll miss it. Bill's is something of an institution, I think it's been around 40 plus years. Really good, classic, no frills burger stand. The double cheeseburger with grilled onions is just about perfect. The burgers don't come with fries, just Lay's potato chips.

Nothing like a yummy simple cheeseburger on a lazy afternoon and a lovely trip into the burger joint past. I'd order a double cheeseburger, the patty's are on the smaller side.

  • Monte Carlo D.

The burger was Great. Not Phenomenal but a really good home tasting hamburger. No special sauce or fries, just a hamburger cooked on a vintage (lol) looking cooking top. Its clean though, hopefully. But if your ever around this neighborhood dont be afraid to stop by. It is better than your regular burger stands. Cash only!

Great Place! Great Burgers! Make sure to say hi to Bill when you go. My pick: The Double Chili Cheese Burger!

  • Sig N.

Remember that scene in Pulp Fiction where Sam Jackson's character goes, "That's a tasty burger!" It very well could have been from Bill's. With the man himself manning the griddle, they serve up some tasty burgers, like an In n Out burger minus the secret sauce. And the staff at Bill's is old enough to be grandparents to the InO kids. There's not menu but there was a sign for Pastrami or something. And my friend mentioned they serve tunafish too. But why go to a place with burger in it's name and not order one. If you are stuck in the Valley and craving a burger, give it a try and make sure to say hi to Bill.

Great burger. Classic hamburger stand circa 1960. Totally fresh, clean and tasty. Only trouble? Not open on weekends so it's hard to get to unless you work nearby...

Step back in time when hamburger stands used to be like this small burger shack, simple good hamburger. Let me say this place is not a hype and all the five and four stars are worthy of this place. Small mom and pop operation that am sure have been in business for long long time. You don't believe me, just look at the grill, its a collector item. The 80+ years old owner, Bill, seems to be younger than life itself, he is the one grilling and I can put him against any youngster claiming to be "GRILL MACHO OR MASTER" he is like the energizer bunny that keeps on going and going. This is not your $15 gourmet hamburger that is 1 to 2 inches thick you eat at these overpriced joints, but hell, here they grill one hell of tasty Muderfuburger!! This shack is so cute, wide open with about 8 chairs that goes around the counter facing the grill area. You place your order and if you lucky to find a seat. This is really a busy place and customers kept on coming none stop. PARKING: Am not sure if they have parking in the back but I parked right on the street. Plenty of parking. THE SHACK: This is a cool little place where you can grab a chair at the counter if you are lucky to find one. It is really fun as you watch Bill flipping burgers and grilling. I think they have another small seating area with benches around the back, but am not sure. THE FOOD & MENU: First of all, I did not see a menu anywhere, no paper menu nor menu on the wall. But I noticed people ordering Pastrami, eggs, burritos, tuna salad and things like that. Seems like most customers are repeat customers and that is a good sign. So I placed my order and waited for available seat and got lucky someone finished his food and took his place. DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER WITH BACON===Two patties on a bun with three slices of bacon and two slices of cheese, lettuce and tomatoes and dressing. I have to say this is the same size as In-N-out burger. I was really surprised that the patties were just as juicy and tasty as In-N-out if not tastier. I really enjoyed it so much I had to order another one. I waited 15 minutes for the second order since they were very busy. They are open 8:30 to 4:00 PM. Some of the times they serve runs out fast. I hear they run out of meat at times and your are out of luck. No french fries, only bagged chips. No credit cards, cash only. THE VERDICT: If you love in-N-out then you will love this joint. Prices are cheap and you get really excellent hamburger for the price. I will go back for sure and I will eat two each visit, that is how good the burgers are here.

An old-school hamburger stand in an industrial part of Van Nuys, and yet I constantly see this place mentioned in news articles about the top 10 best hamburgers in LA. The secret to Bill's success, could best be described "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". While everyone else has been busy trying to get fancy, or compete with the chains, Bill has carried on making burgers in his little stand, the same way for the last 40 years. Remember what good burgers were like in the 70's when you were a kid? They are indeed as good as you remember. And great prices too!

  • yoyo b.

The burger is tasty and no frills. Cheese, lettuce, onions, pickles, tomato and mayo. This place just a walk up stand with some tables in the back. They get super busy at 1pm but if you get there when they open you will get your burger pretty fast. Bill cooks them on the flat top and Hiroko assembles it. They have other things on the menu but they run out of mostly everything. They only had burgers today. No pastrami, no chili, no tuna melts, etc. Not sure why they have other things on the menu because they rarely have any of the other stuff and you should just get the burger. Bill is a funny old guy and he knows how much people love the burgers. They're sometimes closed on odd hours so if you're going to drive far I recommend calling before in case they're closed. I got the impression Bill isn't hurting for business when he said to one guy, "Is McDonalds closed today?"

GGGGGGUUUUUDddddd burgers made with a attitude, cant say ive had that much fun watching a 90 year old guy cussing and swearing the whole time he made burgers. Great simple burger at a little old shack...

Have you ever seen someone eat a raw burger patty with their fingers? If the burger patty is good enough for Bill to eat raw, then I would think he is not putting junk, low quality meat in his mouth, right? Bill is 88 and still going strong so one would think that burgers are not bad for you unless his diet has consisted of raw beef. Where else where you can find a hamburger restaurant owner who sees a long line for his burger say that "a burger is a burger... go to McDonald's!" The thing is Bill, your burger is no McDonald's and not an In 'n Out. For a simple burger, it was so delectable after one bite. It got better and better the more bites into the burger. The burger was so juicy with cheese oozing in the patty while the hamburger bread complemented the burger and melded perfectly with each bite. It kind of reminded me of the Apple Pan, but maybe 10 times better! That's what happens when you have someone running the hamburger grill for 50 years or so. Today was my second attempt visiting this hamburger stall because earlier this month when I tried to visit, Bill & Hiroko's Hamburger was closed due to surgery. I asked the gentleman at the window what the most popular burger was before placing my order and he told me that the double cheeseburger was the most popular. I told him to make the cheeseburger however they would like to make it. There's aren't any fries on the menu, so if you would like a side maybe you can order a side of chips. The lemonade I ordered was pink lemonade out of a container which tasted really watered down. I would skip on that next time and maybe bring my own beverage to drink in the car or ask for water. I would imagine a beer would go perfectly well with this burger. There's street parking in this industrial part of Van Nuys available. A few bar stools are available around the window of the hamburger stand. Cash only out the vintage cash register which declares that "if you want it your way, go to Burger King!" Charming. As Bill would probably say, "DON'T EAT HERE... go to McDonald's... a damn burger is burger!" Sorry Bill, I think this is the reason why people visit you. You are such an interesting character. I love it. The best simple hamburger in LA!

Best curbside burger in the Valley. Only open till 4p so get here before them. Dare I say I prefer Bill's over In & Out....yes!!!! It's a no frills location. It's all about the burger. No fries. Chips. They do serve hot dogs and pastrami. I'll try them another time. OMG. I think I wanna go back tomorrow. Damn. I can't it's Saturday. Monday...maybe. I have that song in my head now " Don't Mess With Bill"

The most perfect burger i have ever had. The secret lies in how simple it is; its just a cheeseburger. It can't hide behind some truffle sprinkled bread, or bacon filled patty. It's a burger, but my oh my is it not a fine burger. Bill is amazing. He is an 89 year old grill master. He has never missed a day of work in 50 years. That's unbelievable. He has perfected his craft, and it's a joy to watch him work his magic. From the small toss of the cheese, to the final marrying of the bun and meat, it's simply great. I can't recommend this place enough. When people ask where they can grab a burger in the area I always tell them," Go to Bill's!" Go to bill's, bring some cash since its cash only as it should be, bring an appetite, and enjoy a good honest burger. No frills, no bs, no fillers; a perfect burger, no other way to put it.

Bill Elwell is the most seasoned Burger Man in Los Angeles. Bill's Hamburgers ranks among the top two best and cheapest in the city. My can pick is the double cheeseburger with bacon. Check out my full review with pics here: bangforyourburgerbuck.co…

Love Bill and his Food! I have tried everything on the menu. I mostly come for the breakfast, but the Burger's are excellent! I enjoy Bill's famous omelette! It's not on the menu, just ask for it! No French fries but they do offer a bag of Lays potato chips. He also makes a killer breakfast burrito, don't forget to ask For Bill's homemade hot sauce!

  • Puffy Q.

Real down-home cooking! I was a bit disappointed when I realized there was no fries, just Lay' potato chips. But the excellence of the burger made up for that. It was even better than In-N-Out! They also had a much larger menu than In-N-Out. The menu had all kinds of stuff on it, from hot dogs to tuna melts, chili, BLTs, pastrami, grilled-cheese sandwiches and, of course, burgers. I'll definitely go back there. WARNING: CASH ONLY!

Simply the best double cheeseburger in the San Fernando Valley.. simply the best.. there's nothing more to say, just get your ass down there because bill and his partner Hiroko serve up simply the best double cheeseburger in the San Fernando Valley. he's been there about 50 years. I will say it one last time. Bill's burgers makes the best double cheeseburger in all of Southern California .

Usually never had a problem with Bills Burgers but today just ticked me the hell off. I ordered a cheeseburger by itself, no chips, no drink. They forgot about me and made everyone else's burger before mine. Mind you, I waited patiently for 45 minutes for a cheeseburger! I was on my lunch break and couldn't wait any longer. I mentioned it to the lady who was taking orders and she said "I know I'm sorry, Not sure what happened. I'm not the cook". Bill came from behind and said "If you don't like to wait, go across the street." I couldn't believe him! I was so upset! The sweet lady was going to give me the burger for free and I said, no, it's ok and gave her more than what the burger was worth and I just left. I'm still so upset! I will never come back here again.

After LA Burger week, put Bill's on the must try list. When I was out that way I tried it. I had a double burger and it was fine. I like little hole in the wall burger stands and this one fits the Bill!

Wow..... That was delicious.....no fries and only Lays chips... everything here is old school including the chef but damn.....the burgers are bomb as £%%¥.... The smell of neighborhood is the worst part of this place....

Anyone who leaves Bill's Burgers a bad review either hasn't eaten there, or a stuck on their high horse and should go back to Burger King. This isn't Burger King people, Bill isn't here to baby you. He gives you the beck damn burger you have ever had, that's it. If you are hung up on the place being small and old looking, then keep moving. And let the rest of us eat there with shorter waits. I love this place if you haven't already realized. You have to try their bacon cheeseburger with pastrami and egg!!!!!!!!!

Good old fashioned hamburgers. They're a bit small but the food is good. Don't expect Gastro-pub Umami style burgers. These are all American Classic tasty hamburgers like the kind you had when you were a kid. Definitely worth a try.

  • Tim R.

As old school as it gets :) I've been trying to come here forever but with the limited open hours it was hard for me to get around to it, but I finally did it and it was worth the wait. Got the double cheese burger and it just melted in my mouth. Simple old fashioned flat top burger that tasted delicious. Nothing fancy, just fresh ingredients and perfect execution. They also have chili burgers, hot dogs, chilly, and about 10 sandwiches to select from. The staff is super friendly and I even got to see Bill.

This is the opposite of fancy but still super good. It's simple and is perfect that way. A couple seats at a counter deep in the valley serving low cost goodness. If it were closer to my house I would go all the time. But I won't ever move to the valley so I will just stop by if I'm tricked into being out there again.

  • RICK B.

This is by far the best burger in the valley, it's what a burger used to taste like before fast food ruined the hamburger! When you get out of your car in the parking lot, you can smell the deliciousness being cooked up. Everything on the menu is great but you have to try the burger first. Love it!

  • Michael E.

It's what a proper burger should be: quality meat, simple fresh toppings and no lack of grease. I'm sorry but fat and grease is what makes a burger taste good. That's why burgers aren't healthy, your not supposed to eat them everyday. But when you want one, get one worth eating. A burger from Bill's is got to be the best I've had in a long time. All washed down with a ice cold Coke!

    (5)
  • Kristin K.

Okay, reminds me of a mom and pop shop in south Louisiana that my grandparents would go to in the seventies. Lays chips from the plenty pack, can coke and high fat, ground beef and American cheese, all adding up to a damn fine burger that takes forever to come out. I was the only lady aside from Horoko and the 'waitress'. Real sausage fest, including an actor who we've all seen but couldn't come up with a show or film he has been in. Tasted good but I'm still gonna go with In N Out as the best LA burger, at any price.

  • Mike W.

Hands down still the undisputed best burger in town! Order correctly, this is not burger -------! I get a double Bacon Cheeseburger seasoned with chili and grilled onions and all the fixins! The breakfast plates and burrito's are a must if you're into breakfast. Bill has been making my burger for over 40 years! The old gas grill is the secret! Fresh veggies but no french fries just plain chips upon request. I say order 2 burgers if you need a side! This place Rocks! Can't wait for the next 40 years! Thanks Bill's Burgers for all you do!!!!! Mike W. Chatsworth, Ca.

After reading all the articles and Yelp reviews I decided it was time to give Bill's a try. This is definitely a basic burger stand that harkens back to the 50's and 60's and I LOVED it! I only got the cheeseburger and had wished I had gotten the double. The burger had a nice char on it and the bun was soft yet crisp from being on the same griddle as the burger. The only thing I wished is 1) they were open later (hours are 8:30am-4:00pm Monday-Friday) and 2) as you can see by the hours, I wish that they were opened on the weekend. If you go, be prepared to wait and bring cash. this is a cash only burger stand, and definitely worth the wait.

Fantastic old-school cheese burger. We are talking size and style of In N Out, so don't expect a dinosaur burger. Have the right expectations and it is a win win. Excellent!

Quaint, old-school, grimey (in a good way) burger stand in the middle of 'Auto Body Row' on Oxnard St. in Van Nuys. Does brisk business from both the blue collar crowd and the white collar types that come down from Sherman Oaks. There are about eight seats at the front counter and a decent seating area in back - with ample street parking and a few lot spaces, it's deceptively accommodating. I went there for one purpose - the burger, which has received rave reviews on yelp, zagat, etc. I sat at the counter, Bill & Hiroko were both there, and asked for 'the house's favorite burger.' Within three minutes, I was presented with a double cheeseburger with mayo, lettuce, pickles and tomato - somewhat smashed, but in a pleasant way. The first bite was juicy and meaty, but not spectacular. Halfway through the sandwich, the taste was better - and by the last bite, I wanted another one. It was damn good - sort of a cross between Dick's in Seattle and In-n-Out. I do want to try the pastrami next because based on the reviews, that is the real sandwich sui generis at Bill's, but it is DEFINITELY worth a stop if you are getting some work done on your car.

  • Eric M.

One of the last of its kind. A lone hamburger shack along a empty street in the middle of nowhere and Van Nuys. Bill, the owner, grills up a classic thin hamburger. No bells. No whistles. Just a juicy, cheesy , perfectly greasy cheeseburger. I get the double meat and cheese. There are no french fries here. Only bags of chips. There are maybe eight red cushioned stools with which to plop your ass down and enjoy so be prepared to take it to go or wait for your own seat. This is a throw back to throw backs. Come and get one before its gone forever.

I had work in the Woodland Hills area and a co-worker took me here. I'm really glad that they brought me here. I had the pastrami sandwich and it held well together and one of the BEST pastrami sandwich I've had in a Very long time. I had a couple of bites of the Double Hamburger and have to say it wasn't a messy burger, not greasy and cooked just right. So don't worry or complain that you have to wait 10 or 15 minutes for your food, because the ingredients are freshly cut when you order the food. Good things to know: 1. Open on the Weekdays only and open until 4pm or until the beef is out. 2. No Frys only chips. 3. He makes he's own hot sauce. 4. Few seats in the front and back. 5. Try it out! It's worth the drive.

The Place: This place shares the same parking lot as my job, and the smell from the meat draws you in. It's a small burger stand with limited seating in the front, a table in the back, and plenty of parking. They are open from 8:30am to 4:00pm (or until they run out of meat lol). During lunch time its a pretty busy place, the service is slow since L.O.P's (little old people, not trying to be mean but they are really old) are running the place. And, the 3 of them looked cramped in the little stand. So if you are looking for a quick bite, this is not the place for you. I only get 45 min for lunch, even though its in the same lot they are just too slow to wait for sometimes. The Food: The food is fresh. I have been here 3 times and the first time I had a pastrami sandwich (rye bread, pickles, mustard, and onions), I was simple but full of flavor and delish! The second time I had a double cheese burger, its not that big so I was able to finish it and not feel like a pig or stuffed turkey. The burger just melts in your mouth. The don't have fries but the have Lays chips. My third time I had to go back to the pastrami....um um just too good.

Honestly love this place but I was there today and was really craving egg on my burger because if you know bills you know egg on your burger is a must. The lady taking orders told me they ran out of egg when I asked for it which was devastating news for me. After my meal when paying I see a dozen eggs just sitting there, after confronting the lady about the situation she told me she lied to me because bill don't put it on the grill when we are busy. Sounds like bullshit to me! Your there to work and make money not have a good time! Your supposed to be busy! Very disappointing and sad place of businesses

Best place on earth! Good to see bills still alive and kicking. Haha Great atmosphere, very small little shaq though. Over heard some stuff, guess bill is deciding to give this place up! Talking about how he's 88, and it's time to retire. Hopefully he's only kidding!!!

Wow what a trip finding this nice elderly couple (Bill is in his late 80's) running this burger joint smack dab in-between factories, auto dealerships, and auto parts stores. Breath in and Breath out. . . . How refreshing. Its feels like the burger joint should be a Van Nuys landmark. (they literally share/block part of a long driveway shared with a newer businesses. They own this little space in this concrete parking lot) I found this place has a lot of character with the husband and wife dynamic duo working the grill. I think she mentioned they have been together for over 40 years+ and Bob has been flipping them for 50+ years! Great old fashion burger. Simple. gooey cheese. limited hours.(till 3:30 pm m-f) From what I overheard, Bob's wife (loudly announced) needs time to relax since she does all the work here :) He cooks and she, hmmm, she ummm, is a great hostess. characters. This may be the OLDEST buger joint owned by the same couple in Van Nuys!!! This burger joint is worth checking out! Anyone want to meet me there...count me in! :)

Well, it's 102 degrees, and I'm sitting outside on one of the stools, with an awning protecting me from the sun. Bill grills me up a double cheeseburger with grilled onions. The Best! Well......... Bill and I talk; we discussed Budweizer Busch Gardens in Van Nuys. Bill has been been here since 1965. 4th and 5th star is for Bill.

When someone tells you this is one of the best burger places around, they are not lying! Bill's has been around for awhile and he has mastered the burger. The menu is short and simple, with various burgers and sandwiches, chips, and drinks. They're got a counter and a large table out back to eat at, so there's not much room if it's a busy time of day. There's tons of parking out back though. Simple but scrumptious should be Bill's motto because that is what you get here. If you're in the area looking for a local burger joint, look no further.

After seeing the yelp ratings and seeing it appear on a "Best Burgers in LA" list, I decided I had to try Bill's Hamburgers. A few things to note. 1) They're only open Mon-Fri until 4pm, so this is not your "midnight, drunk food, I'll have three" burger joint... unless you're drunk before 4pm, in which case, git 'er done. 2) They don't serve fries (I know it's been mentioned before). I had a Hamburger and a can of Coke, which came out to just under $6.00. Since I took it to go and I didn't have any condiments, I ate the burger straight up. I have to say, stand-alone, the burger held up very well. Good bun, (which makes a difference), the flavors worked in such a way that it didn't need any additional sauce or spices. For example, I don't like pickles but I left them in just to see... and it totally worked. It makes sense to me why Bill's got so many good reviews. From what I saw, the burger was made up of lettuce, tomatoes, onions (optional), the aforementioned pickles and the patty itself. There was a sauce on it, though I'm not sure if it was mayonnaise, thousand island or something else. All in all, good burger. Would I go back? Definitely. Would I make the 20 minute drive from home just to have it? That I don't know.

I took a peek at their trash and they seem to use run of the mill hamburger meats and buns. So, it's a mystery to me how they can make their burgers so juicy and delicious. The burgers are very in n out-esque: simple and fresh. Burgers are small, so don't be single minded and get a double burger. I get mine with grilled onions. This is not a place I would drive out of my way for, but it's a great snack if you're in the area.

Great burger place! It's like a hidden gem! The bacon cheeseburger with eggs was delicious! And the best chili I have had! It's only open from 8:30am to 4:00pm.

Top 3 Burgers of my entire Life! Small and simple burger stand but man do they make an awesome burger! I ordered a double bacon cheeseburger with everything which took about 10 minutes. Not as fast as a fast food place but man it's so much better! There were 3 older people working and one younger guy. Everyone seemed happy, had a smile on their face, and talked to the customers. I immediately thought most of the people here come here on a regular basis. I took one bite of my burger and thought, "oh yeah I'm coming back here again...with friends". No crazy ingredients, no fancy gimmicks just a plain old awesome cheeseburger. I'm not sure what their secret is but if you like "In and Out" you will LOVE this place! Everything that fast food burgers are not

Cannot believe I waited so long to come here. I consider myself a hamburger affectionado- and Bills double cheeseburger is out of this world. What's even better - is the conversation with Bill- who at 88 has been doing this 50 years! Don't miss out on coming here- stat. Just wish it were open on the weekends :( but Bill deserves a day off I suppose!

Nice people, happy I got to check it out. I only got the standard double burger "with everything on it" which was a slice of tomato, onion, lettuce, all the condiments. 5$. Average stuff. Generic patties, generic buns, fresh toppings. I haven't had a hamburger for a couple of years, so I could have been easily been bowled over, but I wasn't. Haven't had fries for a couple of years either, so I was disappointed that they don't serve fries. I was ready to through caution to the winds. I might come back though, to try something with extras, so that's a good sign. Extras are available. Once I ordered a hamburger from a downtown hotel and they asked if I wanted "everything on it". A $10 burger turned into a $35 burger. At least, this place is straightforward.

  • Grace A.

This place is a no frills burger stand... Literally a burger stand. The original owner, The Bill himself, cooks your burgers to order on a very seasoned grill. It's so juicy and tasty. The bun is the perfect complement to the patty. It's soft and doesn't overtake the patty like brioche buns. Sometimes I like a truffle bacon burger with aged gruyere, but honestly I'd take this over any gourmet burger any day. There's plenty of parking on the street, but there's also a small lot. Also, it's cash only, but a whole meal is way less than $10, but I'm pretty sure you're going to want to eat more than $10 worth once you bite into one.

I had to update this review after I just read about trendy little hipsters/hippies(aka cake mashers) coming in here expecting Bill to be all nice and shit and think that this place will be like in and out in other words, crap on a bun. They also are just angry cause they cannot handle the most holiest experiences ever and instead end up crying like Nancy Kerrigan because they cannot handle the awesomeness that is Bills. I will never forget when there was some hipster asking about the freshness of his patties and he ate it in front of them and said "fresh enough for you mother f****?" or the time that hippie complained that he and his girlfriend will never come back again because he wiped his fingers on the cloth while eating. "Yeah you'll be back you little b***h" Heres a news flash you whiny pansies. This place is the place where if you want real burgers you come to. This place is where real Elites like myself can be found amongst puny whiny little boys who cry "omg omg he's taaaaking toooo lonnnnng omg omg noooo" wait in line maggot, he does this so that the money shot is bigger after your done having a quadruple orgasm and of course there are the fools who complain that he eats and wipes his fingers while cooking.. sit down you Kanye loving freaks. This is not in and out because in and out is for again hipsters/hippies that do nothing but eat grass all day. This place is so good and badass that Lord Anthony Bourdain came here and had such a religious awakening experience that he decided not to tell anyone about this place for fear of hippies/hipsters coming and making it like Pinks or some thing. He then said that In and out was his favorite/best burger so you nancys will stay away. so stop eating fancy mcdonalds, pull up your pants and eat this place and experience the holiness unless that is of course your a hippie, because well.. then theres always grass you can chew on while you cry cause a tree fell over.

Amazing burgers! Bill was on the grill and was telling us this is the 50th year in business. Need to check it out if you are in the area.

One of my favorite burger stands in the Valley. The stand is run exclusively by Bill and his wife. Rumor has it they met during the Vietnam War. I opted for the classic cheeseburger, which comes with the toppings that you would expect: lettuce, two types of cheese (white & cheddar), tomatoes, pickles, and some light mayo. The combination of these ingredients, the well seasoned patty, and the toasted bun melt in your mouth. I definitely appreciate the homage to simplicity, especially when it comes to you at less than $5. Tips: - cash only - limited seating - plenty of parking

Simply the BEST burgers I've had in Cali. Love em! I'm from Kansas and know what a burger is the flat top grill is the way to a great burger very friendly folks as well my experience was excellent Dan

If you want a prefabricated burger with a smooshed bun and your order wrong, this is the joint! They don't wear gloves while cooking. They have a little shack with a 1 table and rubbish, and a trash bin where you are eating, located behind the "kitchen". No space to go around people. This place may be a 4-5 star when you are high! Someone send an inspector!

    (1)
  • Jeremy B.

It's a hamburger... Nothing special, nothing great. I got a double cheese burger, which was good, but certainly not worth four or five stars like others have given. Service was also really slow and they seemed to get everyone's order wrong.

Perfect. Just finished eating a double cheeseburger with pastrami. Didn't expect to come on yelp but I had to. It was delicious. Every single bite. At other places you taste bread, meat, etc. here the burger and all the contents flow perfectly and is perfectly cooked. He's setting the bar way too high for the other joints haha. Keep it up Bill and Co.

First thing that came to my mind when I saw this place was this place must taste amazing with the line it had and the people eating there burgers and to police officers there waiting in line. I knew it was true, these burgers are by far one of thee most extraordinary burgers and chili dogs I've have ever tasted. I highly recommend you come to this spot and eat here my taste buds gave me a thumbs up! Great Job Bill's!

I recently read about Bill's Hamburgers in the LA Times which stated that he had been in business since the 1950's and has been making the burgers the same way ever since. Bill's is basically a burger stand with about 8 stools. They take your order, you have your food in minutes, you finish and go. Burgers are $3-5. The only side offering is chips which is 90 cents. Overall good burger. Very simple, meat, bun, mayo, lettuce, pickles and a tomato. Perfect size, not gluttonous and doesn't feel like you just ate a gut bomb.

  • Henry T.

The food is great it really is but the man eats while he's cooking and just wipes fingers off with a rag, Now I do that at home but when I'm paying for food? No way. NASTY Not coming back don't care how good food is

Probably one of the best burgers I've ever sunk my teeth into. And that's saying a lot coming from this burger connoisseur. Bill is a cute little old man that still standing there flipping patties. Everyone from around town frequents this joint. From locals to celebrities. Be prepared to meet interesting people with great conversation.

Bill is the man. Great burger and classic walk in diner. Love this place. If you are ever in need of a burger made to perfection then come here.

For the price you pay for a fresh off the grill burger that is juicy and full of flavor, this place has very reasonable prices. Not to mention, everything is made right in front of your eyes (sometimes it even gets to be too much with all the smoke everywhere). But nonetheless, I really enjoy coming here especially since it's down the street. The main man in charge and usually the one flipping the burgers is ol' Bill himself. He's really funny so if you get a chance talk to him. His wife also works alongside with him which I think is adorable. He's old so if he gets your order wrong, don't get your panties in a bunch and just deal with it! There isn't really much variety on the menu so how bad can he mess up your order to begin with. One thing that I love with my burger is fries, but Bill doesn't serve fries :/ just potato chips. The thing that keeps me coming back and is my favorite part about this place is definitely the soft bun that they serve. When you grab your burger your fingers just sink into the bun and I love that! Yum!

**Note that Bill had ran out of Burgers (except for the one patty for his pup at home) BUT to his suggestion, he said his pastrami was better** I've driven past this place a lot and it's always busy or it's closed- so much to my disbelief it was 5:45p and I knew they closed at 6p and there was a seat open! So I thought I'd be "one of those people" and have a seat so close to closing time, but to my defense there was another guy who sat down after me so he technically was "that person". Back to the food.... Bills pastrami sandwich made me feel happy inside was very good, though a little salty, but overall very tasty what made it was the away onions inside of his sauté are what made this sandwich stand out. It was on a perfectly buttered and toasted rye bread and it was exactly what I needed. Trust me that if I get the opportunity to eat here again, even though Bill said his pastrami was better, I will try and have a burger. Enjoy!

  • Evelyn L.

I think this is what McD's use to be like. The owners inside take orders and make your food on a grill-top that is about 2 feet x 2 feet. You can sit at the bar and watch before ordering or there is a semi-indoor seating area where another owner will take your order. Lunch if you just get a cheeseburger and drink will run you less than $10. Beware they have chips for 50cents! Original Lays only. They have fries and other sandwiches, but looks like everyone comes for the old fashioned and affordable burgers.

A hole in the wall, but somehow the hamburgers taste so good The menu is small I think they have about 3 sandwich options Its good quick lunch once in a while no fries just potato chips Not bad at all.

Ok so here's my official review for Bills Hamburgers.... Burger: 3 out of 5 Portion size: 1 out of 5 Service: 3 out of 5 Atmosphere: 2 out of 5 Area: 2 out of 5 Owner: 1 out of 5 I was really looking forward to Bill's after almost a year wait before I actually went there. First off cash only in today's society doesn't work. Next $5.30 for a double isn't pleasant. Wait but I want bacon with that, ok that'll be $1.50 more. Yikes! Well how about some fries? Nope! Ok maybe I'll just bite my fingernails for an appetizer instead! People have been raving about this place but I really don't know why. The last of all straws was Bill, who is 88 years old and damn proud of it, brags in your face that in 2011 he was rated as LA's premier burger joint. He looks at me and my girlfriend dead in the eye and says "Oh ya you'll be back!" I was thinking sure if you pay for it! Not worth the hassle!

I come here because my mom works right down the street. I have to say I've never had a better burger with pastrami. Bill is an old fart but he does know how to grill a mean burger. I definitely recommend this place but don't expect there to be that much seating and interaction with Bill himself.

One word....AMAZAAZING!! Had the Double Cheeseburger w/ Bacon, that shiznit was on point!! Truly it is and i will definitely be back for seconds. It's a little hole in the wall burger stand, but damn its good!! I got here when there was no line (beat the lunch crowd) i heard it can get pretty hectic. You gotta try it at least once and you'll be hooked. I AM!

Good food bad service and bad sitting expect to wait and not be greeted when walking in I was standing around no one took my order .... if you wanna eat with a bunch of slow and old people this is the spot

  • Arnold L.

I would say a better than average burger for the price. Perhaps my expectations were very high due to the reviews I had read but nothing special in my experience. I would never order the chili/bacon as a combo again as I think the chili took away from the quality. After I finished my double bacon chili cheese I ordered just a cheeseburger and that was better. I will be back and if it's better I update this accordingly. So-So for my taste.

  • Matt P.

Came back here a week later and ordered the double cheeseburger and double burger. It took about 15 minutes for my order to be complete. The double cheeseburger was pretty good. Probably one of the better ones I've had. The bun was soft and the cheese didn't overwhelm the burger. Although, I still like the burger without the cheese.

I've been driving past Bill's Burgers on my way to go tutor and always saw that it was packed. I was finally able to go try it out and man must I say that the burger I ate was amazing. Like many people have said, this place is mom and pop owned and they truly make their burgers with love. I don't know what exactly it was that made the burger amazing, but all I know was that all the toppings made it harmonious. This place really lived to the hype. It's a shame that they just don't have french fries, but hey 50 cent chips is nothing to complain about. As I was getting to leave I heard someone order a cardiac arrest which wasn't on the menu so I guess they have a secret menu. I really want to go try out a "cardiac arrest" the next time I go. Who knows what else is on their secret menu, but I know I can't wait to find out!

Bill is awesome and his burgers are delicious! I'm so happy I finally got to experience a bit of LA history watching him do his thing. My partner and I were lucky enough to beat the lunch rush and have our orders taken immediately. Love the old cash register and grill...it's like stepping back in time! Enjoyed chatting with the locals on a beautiful afternoon, will definitely be back next time I'm in neighborhood!

    (5)
  • Zorik D.

he'll never let you down. Not your typical stand in line and order type of place. Take a seat, they know you're there (even if you think they dont) and they'll get to you and you'll enjoy a burger from a grill that's grilled over 3,000,000 burgers (according to Bill).

Great lil mom and pop shop! I love these older type of food places where you know they have to be great to survive this long..everybody who works there is great and they make great burgers.. cheap quick fix if your in the area .. old school place. He actually still has a mechanical register he uses which I think is awesome

Simply some good burgers. It's a spot to check out. Looks like I need to wait until after March 15 to go back since it's closed as of now. The burgers sounds so delicious right about now

I work near Bills so I've had the pleasure of becoming a regular here. Bill is a cool, old school guy but don't expect a conversation. He's there to make a damn good burger. The patties are not frozen as Bill gets them delivered locally. There was a KTLA 5 piece that did a "woman eats 30 burgers" and I was there when they were filming. Yeah, I was disappointed when it turned out to be a woman eats the 30 best burgers in LA and gave them a review. My usual is the Double Cheeseburger around $6. And its the reason that I keep coming back. He's also got some other burgers, pastrami sandwiches, and chili items. Do yourself a favor a give this place a shot!

  • Dave C.

Simplicity! If you like in-n-out burger then you should love this. I just wish they had fries here because im not a fan of plain Lays potato chips. I should get fries from in-n-out and bring them to Bills. Perfect combination

  • Nikki B.

There's double cheese burger with bacon and a fried egg is delicious I could probably eat it every day it's that good !

    (5)
  • Arn R.

My friend took me here for the first time and I was hooked. for this burger category (good & affordable) I didn't think a burger can get any better than in-n-out, boy was I wrong. I think this might actually beat out in-n-out! its sooo simple yet, delicious. I had a double cheese burger with an egg, bacon, grilled onions, and avocado! damn it destroys!! This place certainly lives up to the hype! read the reviews. i too, consider this place on my list of top 3 burger joints! (not gourmet burgers...a different category of mine.) i love the home feel of this place and bill, Hiroko & the staff are also so nice. we love this place and plan to be regulars here.

    (5)
  • James L.

Service is slow (at least 15 mins after ordering not including the time it takes for the order to get taken 5-10 mins), sometimes orders get mixed up (post it note ordering system), and not much seating (8 seats in outdoor countertop but they do have a table in the back)...but it's meant for people who are NOT in a rush. Cash only (double cheeseburger being 5.30) and a surprisingly tasty flat top burger for those who need a change of pace from higher priced LA burgers!

    (4)
  • Peter A.

In & out is probably the most famous burger in SoCal. Bills is one step above that. This man has been flipping burgers on the same flat top grill for decades and man does he do it well. Favorite is the double burger with cheese, pastrami and fried egg...sounds bad, well it is. That's why it tastes amazing!!

I saw Bill's as I was driving by and decided to give this small business a try. As we walked up, I noticed that they close at 4:00, but it was 8 minutes to 4:00, and so I was hoping we would be served. After waiting 5 minutes to get their attention, the guy taking orders looked at the clock and said, "Well, we close at 4." I said "Can I get it to go?" The guy taking the orders said sure, but when I was ordering our third burger, Bill, the old veteran-looking owner, waved his hand no, and the guy taking orders said, "Sorry, we've been really busy today, and we ran out of meat." I wasn't sure if I should believe him, and was really offended at how Bill waived us off as if we were begging for food. After thinking about it some more, it was when I asked for two cheeseburgers with ketchup only for my kids that Bill said something about us going across the street. There was a sticker on the register that's said, "This is not Burger King, you can't have it your way." My kids were really hungry and disappointed that they refused to serve us. After reading many of these Yelp reviews, it appears my feeling that they were actually being rude wasn't a misunderstanding. It's near my office, and I was ready to make this place our go-to burger joint, but I changed my mind. We won't be going back.

I had been inducted into a new club, of which I am proud to belong. Bill's burgers are something special; "10x better than in-n-out" is an understatement. Service isn't the fastest (there are two people in the kitchen, and one serving you), but the burgers taste great. Heard that the pastrami was good too, so going to come back for that. Tasty, if you don't mind a little bit of a wait.

Went to Bill's Burgers and had a great experience. Bill was at the grill cooking 15 burgers at a time....This is a hole in the wall that makes charbroiled burgers- Downside, no fries, just a bag of Lay's potato chips- Reminded me of the baseball park burgers your Dad used to grill after the game.... Bill is soooooooooo cute, you gotta love this place....REMEMBER CASH ONLY

One word "Smack!" This is easily the best burger in the Valley. Bill has been cooking up the same burgers for over 40 years. Do your self a favor and try one of these burgers, if you're ever in the area.

Amazing burgers, I do construction so its really close to the van nuys Los Angeles city building. There hasn't been a time where I have came into van nuys, and haven't stopped here for there amazing burgers. Everyone complains about no fries, but the burgers are just so damn good where fries does not become an issue. Bills is amazing.

In LOVE with this place. Wish I had found it sooner! The perfect little old-fashioned burgers -- just the right size, with grilled onions, a toasted & delectably chewy bun, and a smear of mayo. Served with a side of Lays chips. The chili dog was also the best I've had outside of Chicago. Yum!! And the ambiance is just right for what it is.

I have been wanting to try Bill's forever, but I work over the hill, so trying to find time when they are open and I'm off work is not easy. You see, they are open Mon-Fri (8:30 a.m - 4 p.m.) and that's all folks. No weekends, not on my birthday...Jeesh! The stars finally aligned and my dining buddy (aka my nine-year son) and I trekked deep into Van Nuys to try the burgers that everyone says are the best in town. Back 60 years ago when this joint was established I am sure it was one of only a few building on Victory, but not it sits dwarfed by the many industrial buildings surrounding it. Still this little burger joint that could, marched on, making tasty morsels of goodness. The burgers, cooked on the original griddle, really live up to the hype. They are well seasoned, perfectly grilled and scrumptious. The bread is soft and the condiments that accompany is burger are in perfect proportion. Looking for fries? There are none here, only chips, but it really doesn't matter cause the chips match the burger perfectly. What makes this place more spectacular is Bill who looks like everyone's grandpa. He knew almost everyone's name who walked up and really knew his customers-you do not get that anymore. Well worth the wait to try this place I tell you.

Best burger really? With all of the great burger places in Los Angeles, I don't know what some of these people are smoking. I get that it's old school with a cool old time vibe with I guess Bill still serving hamburgers, but what am I missing? Small ass prefab patties that are the size of a mcdonalds 49 cent burger, they don't have fries, but lays plain chips instead . Sorry Bill, but your place kinda sucks, nothing personal.

Hands down the best (thin) burger in Los Angeles -- perhaps the world. Bacon Double Cheese with grilled onions -- YES. Only open m-f but worth the trip to Van Nuys -- Not since Jay Burger! Go!

Best burger in the valley, if not the city. Burgers, sandwiches. No fries, just potato chips. Great iced tea. Fun service. Great place to have a bite and get going. Not really much else to say, except try an egg on the burger.

Craving for a burger that will satisfy your tastebuds for greasy glory? Want a burger thats so good it will make your toes curl? Looking for a real Mom & Pop burger joint? Well This Is It! TIP: want a good great meal....follow the construction workers. They know all the good value meals with full flavor. TIP: cash only, counter outdoor seating only When I first came here all the seats where occupied by the local construction workers. And thats when I knew I found a gem. From what I heard Bill used to work for the original owners of this small shack burger joint, then bought it from them over 30 years ago. Also the same original cast iron griddle is still being used to cook all the food! Talk about seasoned! The burgers are incredibly delicious and packing flavor. All he puts in it is a little shake of his magic S&P and thats it...the seasoned grill takes care of the rest. He been getting his meat from the same butcher freshly ground for the past 30yrs. No sesame seeds on this magical pillow of a bun that the special patty rest on. Buns are nice, soft and warm and soaks up the juices nicely. No fries here my friends. Lays Chips is king of sides at this awesome shack. Drinks are served in the can variety with the exception of iced tea, lemonade and coffee. He opens around 830-9 and he does serve breakfast. He serves a mean omelette. Onions, ham, cheese, and some other goodies i cant remember, wrapped in egg and covered with chili sauce. YUMMY! Its counter seating only and everyone gets to watch Bill or his wife cook on this OLD wonderful griddle. Its nice to see owners actually work the grill instead of workers. I feel that theres better quality in the food. Watching this nice old mad serve up burgers to his locals, and knowing he's been doing it for over 30 years hits me in the right spot. After eating here I'm always compelled to come back for more. This IS my favorite burger joint. Better than Apple Pan. Give it a try...enjoy the experience. Bill, his wife and crew are first class people. He has always told me whenever I order something new on his menu...."if you don't like it....you don't have to pay for it!" And thats the difference when old school owners run the grill vs cooks. QUALITY

This place has amazing burgers. It was so good I had to order a second burger after I had my double cheeseburger. If you are in the area you should definitely try it out. I like the fact that the owner grills all the burgers himself. The reason they get 4 stars instead of 5 is because I had ordered my food, then a bigger group ordered after me, they got there food before me! They also only take cash!

I had been meaning to check out Bill's for a while because of the great reviews. I finally went and am completely satisfied. A very tasty, well priced burger with wonderful customer service. Bill's has a nice homey feel to it and I will most definitely be back! Parking is very easy as well.

This place is AWESOME! A newspaper (yes, print document) brought me in here. I have passed this place for the last 2.5 years thinking what's with that stand burger joint? Until I read the LA times and said wow grillin since the 1920's, I HAVE TO TRY THIS. Pros: AMAZING TASTE, old school feel Cons: can get very packed, but worth the wait. Burgers either too small or too good. no fries served here :( I ordered the double cheeseburger and was quite impressed with the flavor they got into the patty. It must be because the grill is still original and has served 1000s I am sure. The only thing missing with my burger was some french fries. Their menu will not and has not changed. They offer breakfast. Bill is an old army vet who started this place in 1920 and has been grilling every day mon-fri for the people of the valley. He can be cranky at times, but he's a cool dude. I am going to try their hot dogs next. I think my friend suggested, double chili cheese burger with a fried egg on top. Check this place out!

Hey guys! Gotta tell you guys about the best burger you ever put a lip on! It's Bill's Burgers on Oxnard Street between Van Nuys Blvd. and Kester on the South side of the street in beautiful Van Nuys! Formerly called Bill and Hiroko's and known to old customers as Bill & Sharon's. Old timer Bill is the owner/workhorse of the establishment and he's in his 80's and he hasn't missed a day of work there for 45 years! I personally have been his friend/customer for 30 years now! Since I live in SCV now, I don't get a chance to go there all the time like I used to, but when I'm anywhere near the area, there's only one place I wanna eat at! It's such a landmark in my mind, and I don't even want to think there may come a day when it's/he's not there anymore. Been going there forever and when I'm munching on my double cheeseburger I can't help but make 'Nom-Nom' and 'oohhh' sounds as I go, it's so good! Drives the wife nuts! No crappy franchise food here! It's crafted with care and love and you can taste it!! The other food there is great too, and I'm talking about that chili! One of the last killer little hole-in-the-wall joints still in existence, it is not to be missed! Like I always say about the most deserving, if you go there once, you'll be there twice!! And THEN some!!! Honestly!! Show me you agree by going there and then marking my review as helpful and I'll know you dig it too!

My friends had been telling me I have to try Bill's for like 6 months now. I stopped by while I was In the area today. Just as they promised, nothing short of delicious. You sit at the table, they take your order, Bill makes it in front of you, and it's perfection. I've never had a basic cheeseburger taste so good. You can literally eat like 3 or 4 of them. I also tried the cardiac burger which isn't on the menu. It's pretty much a double cheeseburger with eggs and pastrami. The cardiac was a little heavy but I expected that. Very unique yet very simple. All in all, great burgers. This is the type of place that would have a line down the street if they were open later in the evening. Must try! Thank you Bill!

This place is all hype. Went there ordered asked for fries and they told me they dont have fries. ITS a burger spot hows is there no fries. Anyways whatever i payed something like 5 or 6 bucks for a double double. My order came out in 10 mins in a brown bag looked inside i saw a small burger and i was thinking to myself ah its just probably packed in tight. Got to my house opened to eat it and next thing i know in literally 5 bits it was gone. Lets talk taste. It was good 4 out of 5 stars but how many would i need to buy to get a normal meal in? At least 2 and i dont think id wanna pay for a 12 dollar burger anywhere. Reason i put 3 out of 5 star is because is price point small servicing size and no fries!

This is quite possibly the best burger I have ever had! I had to have two. One was totally filling, but I was sad when it was gone and needed to keep tasting it.

Simple and so delicious. Old school burger hut, only a few seats, food is made fresh to order, right in front of you. These burgers are so tasty it's hard to eat only one.

So simple but so good. A good ol' ghetto burger done the way it should. If it wasn't for Los Angeles magazine or LA Weekly's blog I would have never even known about this place. A small shack hidden in the valley, this little gem serves great no nonsense burgers. Iceberg lettuce, chopped white onions, mayo, pickles and a patty. What's so special then? It has to be the old school griddle that been seasoned over the years where the flavors just build as bits and scraps get scraped off instead of washed off. Is it a top 10 LA burger? Probably not. Is it worth driving across town for? Probably not. But if you are in the area and craving a good burger with a dash of great hospitality and wit, Bill and Hiroko's is a must stop. Don't worry if you don't look like you fit in, my buddy I didn't quite fit in until the lunch wave came and the girls in heels and sun dresses taking photos with their iPhones showed up and made us look like regulars.

I don't get all the rave. It's a really basic, thin, hamburger. yes its like $4, but it could be a frozen patty for all I know. For the price, its the best, but you can get much much better burgers out there.

Best fast food burgers I have had in LA! Super old school place, and lady behind register :) Burgers are kinda small so get a deluxe or a couple of em if you have an appetite. No fries though! Oh well. GREAT BURGERS Oh yeah, cash only.

Had a double bacon cheeseburger. $6. Can't beat the value. Went pretty early so it was not crowded. If this place gets crowded I can imagine that ordering over the shoulder of people eating might be a pain. There really is something to be said about the flavor that comes from a flat top that is so old. I'd be back but would come at off hours.

One of the best classic cheeseburgers I've ever had. Nothing fancy, just a SOLID burger. They are truly experts in burgers and don't serve fries.

This is like totally my Favorite place in the Valley... a stand alone, whole in the wall, Burger joint in the middle of no where in an industrial part of Van Nuys in the San Fernando Valley. Originally Bill's Hamburgers, now Bill & Hiroko's Burgers... Burgers done the right way, Old School inside and out, the grill Bill uses is around 90 years old and the register is just as old... and Bill himself is 86 years young, (he's my idol)... still going strong making perfect burgers for 60+ years, the whole crew is great, antique but sweet... ok now lets focus on the burger and menu.... "Perfection in it's simplicity" I say!... Fresh white buns, crisp iceberg lettuce(shredded), freshly sliced tomato, right amount of pickles, american cheese, ketchup, mustard, mayo and the perfectly seasoned beef patties are always fresh!... they come in very fresh and local (Northridge) it's so magical when food is fresh people.... it really is what "In and Out" used to be and I love the sign they have near their antique cash register that reads: "if you want it your way, go to Burger King" but really Bill's way is the way I really do want it, it's really my way! theres more on the menu, but I keep it true... Double Cheese burger, Chips, Lemonade. It's Burger heaven. so from The Crew, to the Atmosphere to the Food, it's 5 STARS ALL THE WAY!!!

Had to try this place while Bill is still there, you can't see the menu, no fries, cash only. The burger is simple and good, it is a bit pricey for what you get but I personally do not like a "meaty burger". I like a patty in proportion to the bun and condiments. The best thing about the "Bills" experience is during the long wait for the food ,you'll make a friend. It was cool that folks were so nice, friendly and laid back.

I consider myself a bit of a foodie so believe me when I tell you this... If you're in the mood for a burger... and I mean a good old fashioned traditional BURGER! THIS is a place you want to eat. I got a double cheese burger and I only have one complaint... I SHOULD'VE GOTTEN TWO! Fresh off the grill, made to order. I knew this little hole in the wall was going to be amazing even before I took a bite. Why?? Because the nice lil' 70 year old lady who took my order knew half the customer's names (and there were quite a few customers)!!

  • Jon S.

Love this little burger joint. Super fair pricing and the food is amazing. It's got a little bit of a wait time so if you're feeling something super quick this probably isn't the best way to go but if you have the time I highly suggest coming here. They only have 8 seats at the counter so if you're coming in a group you're gonna have to wait around for other customers to leave before you can sit down. Other than that Bills definitely has my 5 star vote. Thanks to everyone at bills for always being generous!

Yesterday I had the distinct honor of enjoying a double cheeseburger with onions, prepared by Bill himself. I have lived in Los Angeles over 20 years and I am ashamed to say, this was my first time eating here. They serve the classic California burger, but it is a version of that burger that all others try, and fail, to be. Do yourself a favor, if you're ever in the area don't miss out on this classic old school burger joint.

Bill's and Bill is great. Started in 1965, the year I graduated from Granada High-this is a great place. The other day I had a Double Chesse burger with a chilli dog. Today a Double Cheese, grilled onions and Chilli. Then a Pastrami sandwich. Double great both times . I wouldn't have the Chile dog or Pastrami again. Bill is 88- Wow. He is a nice person, but go slow. Hello!

Read about this place in an AHT review. It's a solid old school burger place. None of the frills that the modern, fancy establishments require. This is a small shack with limited seating and limited options (but enough to keep you satisfied). And yet, once you take a bite, you'll understand why this simple burger shack has stayed open all these years, despite limited hours (only open on week days and closed by 4pm). It's the simple pleasure that comes from biting down into a genuinely tasty cheeseburger which doesn't require 12 year aged gruyere or imported wagyu beef. Nothing here but good, old fashioned happiness. While I sat there enjoying my feast of burger and chips (no fries available), several junior high-aged kids came to the counter and ordered. The owner/cook asked, "Why don't you go to McDonald's? They have hamburgers too and they're right down the street." The kids responded, "Your burgers are so much better." The owner smiled and went back to what he does best. I couldn't help but smile too.

Finally checked out this local burger stand, been driving past it for years and never stopped. Got a couple of cheeseburgers and chatted with some of the other patrons while I waited. Really great old school burger stand with a loyal cliental, every person there was a regular. The food is a little bit more than you'd pay at a chain place but when you watch the old couple making your food and think about real cost of business it's completely acceptable. Finally on to the burger, it was a classic burger stand burger in the best possible way. Simple, well made and tasty, not fancy or gourmet, just plain good. Reminded me of the many stands that my old man used to take me too growing up in the valley. I bite of nostalgia that hopefully will be around for a while.

Geez, I hate to put such a mediocre review when everyone else is raving. I'd driven past this place almost every day cause I live nearby and never gave it a second thought until I saw a couple people giving it praises on Hidden LA on Facebook. So, me and my roommate finally got around to trying it. I think the issue was the order was taken down wrong. I ordered a chili burger. My roomie ordered her burger extra well done. My chili burger was charred to a crisp (which makes that skinny little patty pretty sad) and they put chili on her burger, so essentially, they combined our two orders. So neither of us were very excited, but agreed that at least it was priced right. Maybe I'll give it another try, but probably won't go out of my way. Sorry, Bill.

Perfect lunch time burger, old fashioned hole in the wall, walk up, cash only joint. I get a double with everything and orange soda each time I visit, it cost about $6.00 total and that includes a tip and I'm good till dinner time, but this is not burger king don't go in making special requests you just won't get it - order off their small menu and except a well cooked seasoned burger and you'll be pleasantly surprised, but if you're a control freak and want to make special requests go someplace you pay for that kind of service, I love his little hole in the wall.

Do your taste buds crave the flavors of a simple yet excellent burger? Then Bill's could definitely be the place for you. It is absolutely no-nonsense, and absolutely delicious. It's meat, bun, lettuce, tomato, onion and cheese. Ketchup and mustard on the side. The burger merits five stars, but as terrific as the burger is, I can't give Bill's five stars. Why not? Two reasons. First, they charge 40 cents for a cup of ice. I'm not cheap, but 40 cents for a cup of ice is just ridiculous. Were patrons abusing their ice privileges? The second reason is the lack of french fries. Bill's is tiny, and maybe a fryer would take up too much space. Personally, a burger and chips just doesn't do it for me, so I can't give Bill's five stars. Still, it's an outstanding burger.

Excellent high quality ol' fashion burger joint. These days it seems like most new burger places are in a competition as to who can stuff their burgers with the most and oddest combination of toppings. Not that there's anything wrong with that but there's something to be said about a joint that can make a top notch "basic" burger. I'm talking meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and onions. Ol' timer Bill is serving up just that. A very good ol' fashion American burger. With fresh ingredients, seasoned and cooked to perfection. I was a little disappointed by the fact that they don't have fries, but the Lays potato chips where a good substitute. I like the size of the simple hamburger as it allows me to enjoy a really good burger and not feel guilty for stuffing my face. If you do feel like doing so though, you can ask for a triple, quad, or as many meat paddies as you can handle and they'd be more than happy to serve it up. Their hours aren't the best as they close at 4pm but I'll definitely look forward to bringing my car in for service next time down the street at the Keyes Chevrolet. It'll give me the excuse I need to pay Bill another visit.

  • Pierre C.

5 stars and Bill's Hamburgers deserves it. A simple, cash only burger shack. They serve only Lays chips. No fries. I order the same thing every time a double bacon cheeseburger!!! (It is a slice of HEAVEN) Bill cooks up a mean sandwich. It is grilled fresh every time. Like anything fresh, it does take awhile, especially with a crowd. But be patient and smell the aroma. It will increase your appetite. You might actually be inclined to order another one after grubbing down these tasty burgers. Bill has been a grill master for decades, so it's very inspiring to see him cook right in front of you. He is very friendly and offers small chit chat. Bill was so nice to me one hot afternoon. I arrived at his shack at 4:15, (15 mins after closing time) and he served me the last burger of the day. I was so appreciative, I could not stop thanking him since I am aware he never serves food after hours. I shook his hand and he said, "next time make sure you come a little earlier." An old school, no frills burger joint that is a gem in the valley.

I remembered reading about this place, so I went for a late-morning cheese burger at around 10:45. The reviews here are a little surprising, but I think that people like the idea of this place more than the actual food. The burger was good. In fact, it was very good. I would get this again if I were in the area. BUT Is a backyard-style cheese burger worth $5.00 (4.20 + tip)? Is it worth the drive out to the middle of valley? No. and definitely no it is not. If I were real hungry, and I were in the area again, I would make it a double cheese burger for that extra dollar. I think comparisons to in and out can be made, but it's mostly just lazy to do so. Yes, both burgers have "special sauce" and american cheese, but they taste different. Personally, I like Bill's better, but it's close. I will almost always prefer a gourmet burger, and I don't really mind paying $5.00 more for the gourmet. But sometimes you just want that kind of simple burger that you could have easily made at home on your bbq. Bill's is good for that--but so are a bunch of other places. I live near Astro-burger in weho. It makes the same burger, but is .75 cheaper. I cannot tell any difference, so it is unlikely I will re-visit Bill.

Let me tell you...It IS A REALLY WELL MADE BURGER, There are no complaints aloud on this one...you cant ask for more. you reallly cant ask for more. get it with BACON.. get it with EGG even get it with PASTRAMI!! this is a no joke "bad to the bone" burger joint. simple is the best. BEST. yeah.... its the best.

Yes 5 Stars - Not for the food, necessarily, but the experience - it's a vanishing 1950's time capsule, without the Doo-wop music and roller skate car hops. Most Youngsters won't get it, some Hipsters will, but anyone who ever Cruised Van Nuys Blvd. on a warm Wednesday night should eat here at least once in their lives. Yeah, it's only a hamburger, but one you can't get anywhere else in the World. And for that, Bill is rightfully a legend.

Had lunch there again yesterday.... Just as I rememebered; good cheap burgers with chips on the side. Some dude asked for orion rings or fries - Sorry, no way Jose! This ain't Burger King, you take it or leave it. I'll take it any day. Jens

Now this place is a hidden gem. For those of you that are Burger fans, this place is a must try. The other day I was having lunch and a couple was talking about how they were just on Yelp and how this place has this grill that is over 40 years old and seasoned with all that yummy sirloin grease from back in the day. Way before my time. So, i have tried the burger, the cheeseburger, but never tried the chili cheese burger. Wow the chili is very good and has lots of flavor. Next time I go I will only stick to the Chili Burger and a diet coke please.

Constantly am I on the prowl for a great burger joint. I've been working in Van Nuys for about a year now and amazingly have only just now found this place thanks to the article in LA Magazine. This is the real deal, and the kind of place I often drive well out of my way to lunch at. Incredibly, this place in only 2 miles away from my office, meaning that I will be coming here many more times. It is old-fashioned, laid back, with no frills whatsoever. The burger was fast, cheap, simple, and absolutely delicious. It would be nice if they served fries, which they don't, but I don't argue with someone's 50-year-old ways. I'm very glad I found this simple, old-fashioned burger stand. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to find the same.

A co worker saw this place on some TV show and we decided to check it out. It's extremely easy to miss since its just a tiny little stand in a parking lot that takes cash only, but their burgers are damn good!! I think I like them better than In N Out.
